damn, that's expensive.
when you say 'front pipe section' do you mean manifold?

sorry, my mechanical skills are near zero.

my 1.8 Auto has a slight exhaust blow at the moment, mechanic says it's at the point where the manifold connects to the engine - as it warms up it does quieten a little (metal expanding and closing the gap a bit).

however, he reckons that to remove the manifold to check on it could open a can of worms in that the bolts holding the manifold on may have seized over time (i remember when my dad had the distributor replaced, MB had to break the housing off with a lump hammer!).

he's 99% sure that the manifold itself is fine, not needing to be replaced. is there a gasket between it and the engine? is it reasonably cheap to replace?

if i go ahead and get it removed/looked at, and the bolts need to be broken off, what's the £££ damage?

Yep, the exhaust manifold gasket.

Not sure how much they are separately (I wouldnt have thought much at all)... but know that they are included as part of the head gasket sets aswell..

The manifold gaskets are avaible from Euro Car Parts and the dealership, and from what I can remember, there isn't a HUGE difference in price between the two.

Give them both a call and find out. If the prices are still relatively the same, get the MB one.

As for how much it will cost to get done - no idea im afraid.

Speak to whoever is going to undertake the job, get a quote and post it here and i'm sure members here who have had it done/done it themselves would be able to advise you whether or not the price is worth it in terms of the difficulty of the job..

just looked up the price of a gasket on GSF, it's peanuts.

more worried about the bolts (see pics) and 'can of worms' likelihood.

if i get the manifold taken off, is it easy to re-paint?
it looks like most of the original heat-proof white paint has gone...

My manifold has a nut missing it looks like one of the bolts has maybe sheared in half but its still ok no leaks or anything! I'm leaving that "can of worms" well alone for a while!

I'll be watching this thread with interest :)

soak them in plenty of penetrating oil and when your undoing them use gradual force they will be fine ;)

cheers Al, good advice much appreciated!

i've just been talking to a mate of mine that's much more skilled than me (in fact
now something of an expert after restoring an Alpina exhaust pretty much from scratch).

we're going to get the car up on stands when time next allows and assess whether we can get
the manifold out or whether i get a mechanic to remove it before i take time out to prep and re-paint the manifold.

obviously high-temp paint needs to be used, but does it come in anything other than black, white
or red oxide?
even a basic silver or gunmetal would be an improvement...

Just soak them in penetrating oil like al said and they shouldnt be a prob. The worst thing that can happen is they shear off, but then you would only have to drill the studs out and re thread the holes.

And yes you can get high temp silver paint, used it on my brake callipers and manifold. B)

no not the manifold...

two front pipes from manifold thru resonator box

from manifold to under drivers seat only !!!!!!!! thats why i was shocked !!!

tried 3 exhaust places and merc all came out bout the same... special order only etc etc

not even listed in the books they had just for 1.8 2l etc nowt for cossies.

nways got it done by powerflow in exeter yesterday after a 21/2 week wait

what a difference got a nice rasp on lift of that i was missing even more pronounced now.. have an elongated resonator box... looks a bit like a cherry bomb where the old one was flatter.

so when i get the mid section and back box done in the future will have it done in the same way i think...

my apologies for a total and utter thread-jack, cra arc!

i was wondering if a moderator could move all the manifold related posts from this thread to a new one entitled "manifold gasket removal & replacement" ?

Mine has a nut missing too....the last nut furthest from the front of the engine. The gasket around that last pipe looks black. So, its not sealing properly. My cousin alerted me to a smell at start up which has so far gone undetected by me. He suggested that I replace that piece...

I've got no idea what the cost will be, but from reading the threads on manifold removal, I'm shuddering. My cousin reckons that it should not cost that much, but I'm still cringing........can of worms....can of worms.... :'( ....but hey, maybe its all my car needs to make it as good as new... ;) ...so I'm staying positive.

At the moment, I do not feel any loss in power, or excessive fuel consumption. There is only an engine note change when going above 2000 rpm.....then I've got a nice deep growl...before 2000 rpm....it sounds like a 1300 or 1500....

Anyways, I've got a 2.3 8v RHD....so I hope I can have it done when the car clocks 200 000km in the next couple of months...

Where is the "pinned" - "manifold gasket removal & replacement" section....or has it been removed..?

Neil, normally if you run the car spray wd40 on the nuts, turn it off and crak them open
using a socket and pull bar. easy jobi, as for your manifold try this place www.zircotec.com 01235 434 326
It's a special paint that has a thermol coating with a satin/matt finish, the coating acts in the same way
as if you have exhaust wrap on. And the beauty of this? it's available in 13 colours
