been faffing with my project 2.3 and after some serious work - she is nearly ready for her first MOT fora while....

been having some issues with the exhaust though:

when i first stripped the turbo system off the 2.3, i fitted the manifold from my old 2.5 - sorted...

i then bought a set of 2.3 down pipes - fitted, sorted

then i planned on using my spare 2.5 centre box and back box but realised the front pipes and centre box are different between the 2.5 and 2.3 - the 2.5 front pipes are 2 pipes all the way and its the centre section that drops it to 1 pipe. on the 2.3 the front pipes are 2 to 1 then the centre section is 1 pipe in 1 pipe out.....

no problem, bought a 2.3 centre box - thanks mercman! fitted this then went to install my 2.5 back box onto it and realised the 2.5 exhaust pipe is a larger bore...no problem, i cut the end off, sectioned it, then welded it all back together - fitted snug - job done.

so, i go to start the car today, thinking she'd purr.....NO CHANCE! still sounds like it has no exhaust at all! from what i can tell its still blowing real bad from where the manifold joins the front pipe.

my question is: (it was too late to look properly..)

is this extreme blowing caused by my inability to mate the pipes correctly (i.e: a trip to an exhaust fitter with a ramp would re-seat/adjust and cure within mins!)

OR

an isse with the bore/size between the 2.5 manifold and the 2.3 downpipes?

although its hard to see, when i did the front pipe to manifold connection, everything seemed to go together fine?

suggestions?

thanks all

Hi

Yes there is a difference between the 2.3 and the 2.5 manifolds and downpipes,
the 2.5 manifold has a larger diameter than the 2.3 manifold about 10mm not exact,

If you can get your hands on a 2.3 manifold you should be in buisness :D

I think this might be your best option or you could try and get your hands on a 2.5 downpipe, might be easer to get the manifold do
I think Smiffy is selling alot of engine bits of a 2.3, you might be lucky, He might have a manifold to sell

....sure?

the way i thought about it earlier was that the bolt holes must have lined up or i wouldnt have even connected them together....

would this be possibel if they were different diameters?

Hi ya

I tried the same thing as you last month and it just wont work as there are all sorts of differences in the 2.3 and 2.5 system.
The manifolds are different sizes but mounting positions are the same as the engine block mounting position is the same for both versions in that section of the engine.

You will need a complete 2.3 system, The 2.5 system wont work too well on the car. Cnanging the pipe dyameter is not a good thing and any exhaust guy would tell you that like they did me

Will a complete 2.5-16 exhaust system bolt up to a 2.3-16? How much larger are the header primary tubes on the 2.5-16 headers?
