Hi guys,
I have just purchased my first mercedes 2.5 16 valve. It has done 159k, (is there a set mileage that it is recommended to get reconditioning done?). It has full history and it seems to be well minded. It is an automatic, to be honest i would have chosen a manual if i could find one in as good nick as this one basically because i am used to manuals. I am very happy with the car. There are a few jobs that need doing, the lights on the dash dont work and i have changed the fuse, one of the rear door skins is pealing at the top and the gearbox over-revs sometimes between 2nd and 3rd. Does anyone know any solutions to my problems? Oh, it also revs up and down at tickover and sometimes cuts out, the mechanic reckons its the idle control valve. He checked and sealed all the pipes. Does anyone have a part number for an idle control valve? I will post some photos soon. I live in Ireland. Thanks for your help. Martin.

Welcome to the gang.
The flaring between second and third is a fairly common issue - I have it very slightly too. I can't remember exactly what the name of it was, but there is a unit (I'm sure it was the K1 or something?!) that costs very little new that stops it. I'll have to do some digging to find it again.
As for idle control valve (IACV) I have a brand new one that you can buy if you want. I bought it thinking it was the problem I had, but it turned out not to be. They're roughly £180 from the stealership!

A ford would be on its way to the knackers yard at 160k. The Sierra cosworth needing a rebuild much earlier than that! After having more replacement parts in its life than the car is worth.

Your Merc is just run in at 160k and quite ready for another 100k

Hi mate.... welcome to the 190 world!! Its very addictive.

Regarding your lack of instrument lighting..... I had the same problem on a 2.5D I briefly owned about 18months ago. It may just be that you need to turn up the rheostat on the instrument cluster. Thought my bulbs were all shot til I twisted the little scamp. Then it was suddenly lit up like a Christmas tree.

Worth a try. All the best.

Hello Mate,
Welcome to the Lifesavers Club..!!

About the lights..it can be just that you need to turn up the dimmer..If it's the bulbs..you will have to take the Instrument cluster out and replace them..??

It's not a big job anyway I've had mine out and back in 3 times..just be carreful not to use the Dashboard or Steering wheel to pull yourself up while you're working,as I did,as it leaves you with a sloppy fit afterwards....Like I had...!!

Cheers

Cosser
