Hello Mates. Wanted to know what the engine idle speed should normally be after the transmission has been selected in gear and with the aircon off!!! mine seems. At neutral or park, it is 800-850rpm (sways a bit sometimes), but on shifting to gear (reverse or drive), it dips to 650-750. My posts regarding the engine stall has definately given you guys a tough time, but need to share this also. When the engine tries to stall, it happens usually in gear. it slowly drops to 500 and then dies. But many a times, it lives!!! and when that happens, all warning lights just come and go but the ABS light does not flash (seems the OVP is doing well). Another thing - there's a slight dip in engine speed when the mechanical fan starts along with the electric fan (but just momentary). Any test to ascertain the Fuel Pump Relay's proper functioning? there's a way to check the OVP.... |

Sounds like the fuel pump relay is OK. It can only really fail in a way that means the car won't start at all. Dips in engine speed with the fan should be normal. I believe on a non-16v model the Idle control valve can be adjusted (after giving it a good clean out!) in some fashion which could increase idle revs. |

According to the manual for a 2 litre, idle speed should be 720 to 820 rpm. Mine is about right according to this and maintains same revs in any gear selection (eg P, R, N, D). When the air con is switched on it keeps the same revs but ocassionally goes up to about 900 rpm and stays there about a minute before dropping back to normal. This seems to be in response to the air con unit demanding more power, but I'm unsure what it is. Mine (1986 2L auto Japanese import into Australia) had an intermittent and annoying stalling issue for about 2 months after I bought it (about once once a fortnight) when it would stall when stopped and in drive, but would start up immediately afterwards. Had some breather hoses replaced, but I think what cured it was some carby/fuel injector additive which claims to clean out things internally. In my case I think it actually did. Hasn't stalled or threated to do so for 2 months now so it seems that problem is solved. |
