Hi all, was trawling the net for some 190 16v info when i stumbled upon this forum. YAY! so i decided to join in on this cool site. i'm hoping you guys can help me out here with a problem? Anyway....here goes, for about a week now when starting from cold, it takes about 3 attempts to get the engine running, it starts no problem, idles ok but feels like its missfiring. as soon as i touch the accelorator it hesitates badly and dies. if i start the engine and just sit and wait a couple of minites i can manage to pull off without it dieing on me, but it still hessitates badly when accelerating. once the engine has warmed up the problem dissapears, but the car still hasnt got the loved OOoomph that it used to have. Had it MOT'd this week so i asked the garage to check it out for me the same time, but they couldnt find anything wrong, suggested it may be dodgy fuel, but im not convinced. Gerwyn |

Resolder the OVP relay for starters.(use the search function on here) Have the engine serviced-especially so on the ign side. Just a tip... Most shy away from changing the OEM merc ign wires as these are an arm and a leg. What more often than not deteriorates is the wire per se,and this can be had by the meter from the local merc stealership INCLUDING the wire ends at a MUCH more reasonably rate. |

OVP is sort of the "main" relay of the KE system. Behind the battery in the engine cmpt you´ll notice two rather large electronic "boxes". Outermost is aluminium cased(ABS unit) and the inner is out of black plastic(ECU) To the left of those there´s at least two relays. One out of black plastic and the other an aluminium cased on with either one or two fuses ontop. The latter one is the OVP(over voltage protection) relay. Take it out of its socket. Using a small flat bladed screwdriver(jewelers),pry the imprint around the base of the relay apart and pull at its bottom where the "pins" are at with a pair of pliers. Yes..it´ll take quite a bit of persuading to get it out of there... Having done that, bring the relay to your CLEAN work bench. Resolder the entire relay board. DO NOT over analyze if its broken or not. Point is that hairline cracks can,and usualy do,develop in the solder joint at the board and the hard parts of said relay is rarely broken. Just...resolder it with some fresh MINUTE amounts of solder..(to get rid of imperfections et al) and reinstall. My bet is that your car will thank you. |

This may sound foolish, but you should also check the function of the cold start valve. Especially if you got a batch of bad gas something may have clogged it up. Also, when was the last time you changed your fuel filter, and the filter in the fuel distributor? |

finally got around to spending some quality time sorting out this problem today. started with the ovp relay (thanks for the info Racing) resoldered it and tested it to be working fine, but still took 4 attempts to get the engine running. had another good look under the bonnet and found two bare wires winking at me! and behold! not too far away there was a plug missing its wires to which i think it serves a sensor on the fuel distributor. i quickly soldered the wires back in with my `still hot from doing the ovp relay` iron and now all is good again, car starts first time and no more hesitation when pulling away, in fact the engine is running a lot smoother now. not sure what the sensor actually does tho? but it done the trick. was going to put some pics of it on here but couldnt figure out how to post em onto this message, duh! so, while i was on a winning streak today i also changed the thermostat cover which has been cracked for a while now for a nice clean metal one. A saturday well spent me thinks gonna take her out for a blast later to celebrate Yay!A big thank you for the help and advice from you guys. |
