the lifters in my 2.6 engine make a loud tapping noise from a cold start up then gradualy quieten down as the oil warms up,if i fit new lifters will this cure the problem, do i need to fit new standard size spacer washers. there is no noise when engine is fully warmed up, when i bought the car it had 140,000 miles on the clock with fully stamped merc service book to 128,000 miles but the oil was like black tar, i changed filter plus oil twice and flushed it outas well. any advice would be helpfull thanks |

I had my lifters/tappets/whatever replaced recently, mine had done 113k. Duplex Timing Chain was replaced at 108k, so when the tappets were done it pretty much sounded like a new car. The 'black tar' doesn't sound good, hopefully your flush has helped. However, i had the tappets done 3 weeks after an oil change, and the mech that did the tappets wanted to flush and change the oil AGAIN as he found some 'crap' in there when the head was off/open/whatever... Cost me £240 but sounds like you're having a go yourself? |

quit being cheap and start using a good 100% synthetic oil if all the lifters are rattling (however it could be too late). The main cause of lifter failure is a low / out of oil situation. And if the tic is still present after warm up (lightly), it is more likely you have one or two collapsed lifters. If you are going to the effort to renew the lifters - do the valve stem seals too. |
