Guys this may seem like a silly qeustion but with the bonnet up on your 190 if you rev the engine does it sound rattly/tappetty from the top end????? I have never owned another of these cars and don't know anyone else locally so I could have compared the noise.... Alot of people have said they are a bit top end rattly anyways I have re-shimmed the cams already any comments would be appreciated?????? BTW sounds sweet when its going along..

They don't have tappets. The cam goes directly to the valves. These cars are notorious for cam clatter, but still, get it checked for stretch. And it's best to have everything replaced at once - I've just had my sump off, and found bits of plastic from a disintergrating guide rail. |

Cheers Conrad I was aware of the lack of tappets just trying to describe the sound and I think you summed it up "cam clatter" I took me long enough to re-shim the cams maybe I should have replaced the lifters Do you have to remove the front lower timing cover to get at the guide rail?? |

Yes. It's a real pain of a job - I have to get mine done, but I'm taking it to a specialist. Not something I want to attempt to be honest! |

mine usually needs topping up with oil when it starts rattling, but only can hear it when idling. will be interesting to see how you get on. |

They're usually 'noisy'. I remember hearing that a pronounced rattle at idle, that goes away as soon as you give it just a few revs, is more of a worry? |

Checked my chain today, just to make sure everything is 100% safe and tight. Thankfully all is good. No tooth or chain wear

Matt just out of interest how would you describe a worn chain and sprocket apart ???? As My chain looks fairly recent the removable link looks new and the chain links them self don't seem to look really shiny and worn Please bear in mind I bought this engine off Ebay from Germany and was told it had done around 110,000 miles  I am going to change it hopefully next weekend!!!

Well it sounds like the chain is ok, as long as its not movable i.e. floppy. The sprocket teeth should have a nice profile and not worn or rounded, which could lead to slippage <_< |
