is it worth puttin an induction kit on my 1.8 . and if i do what will i get out of it im not so much looking for performance, more the engine sound also, if not in favour of it, any other suggestions ? or should i just save up for a 2.5 cossy? (got quoted 2500 a yr insurance with my current no claims (0) age 20 , although ill wait 4 months for my 1 yrear no claims and ill also be 21 by then ^^ (more just curios ,a s i jsut fitted a powerflow exhaust so the backend sound nice, and the fronts a lil rattly) |

Basically you wont gain any induction noise from an 8v engine even with an induction kit. The 16v's however create a lovely induction note

I disagree. You can get more induction noise from any engine if you want it, from a lawn mower to a ferrari. I have drilled the air box and added a greenair filter to my golf and the induction roar through the air box is intoxicatingly nice Doing this got rid of a few flat spots i had and in mid to high range revs it now fies

On more modern engines yes Stu but not on the 190 8v engine. Its all down to the design of the intake system. An 8v 190 engine doesnt have a great induction note as I found out when I had a kit on my old 2 litre. Makes hardly if any differance in noise, although it may sort out a few flat spots as you say. It did on mine. |

Longest build time in history?

I have replaced all the air box with a Pipercross panel filter straight on the side of the carb on my 2.0ltr 8v. It does make a difference, breaths easier, a little more power but makes the car pull much better in fourth and fifth. And it does sound much better. Dave knows nothing. Don't look at his post count. He's even been in my car! He knows it makes a difference! lol 16vlvs are too bloody expensive when you are our age. (I'm 23). Doesn't mean i want one any less, it's just there is no one who will insure us properly and for less than c£2000. There was even a thread the other day about classics insurance no longer being an option too? I'll have one at some stage, but there are far more interesting things i can do with mine without taking a perfectly sound 16v off the road and denying someone elses pleasure. Mart x |

thanks guys for the info, i posted on another forum also (my local modifier car club) and they gave me some good tips on what to get if i want to go for either noise or performance, so ill be going for the noise option ^^ apparently a metal air intake will do the job, makes the exhaust sound better too which should be nice as i noticed my new exhaust has some flat spots on 3-4 revs ill probably get round to getting one on my next paycheck ^^ |

 Matt take an 8v for a spin round the block with no air filter housing on at all, you'll hear some induction sound then mate!! crysak, if you are going to do anything, you could try get a 90 degree rubber boot thingy from an old Golf gti or similar,( they have the same injection system), and get some nice alu ducting, with a cone filter on the end, just behind the grille. There would probably be more satisfaction in making the thing than in the increased sound etc.. Not to mention looks better than the pancake thing, but: Do it on the cheap, (better yet just get a K&N filter to replace the stock one) and spend the money on a good oil & filter change and some ZX1. Your engine will prefer it in the long run!

I did do that once on the old 2 litre 8v and it still sounded crap. Im just putting it plainly here, you wont get a great induction noise form a 8v intake system. |

Depends what intake system you have
It wasnt the nicest sound though I'll admit, it just sounded like what it was, driving with no airbox at all... |

Nah I agree with matt, After being happy with the amazing throaty sound that came from my ford fiesta(old car) bolt on, I put an induction kit on my 190 and there was no sound difference really, and performance increase wasn't all that noticable, so I just stuck it back to the standard system and will eventually be putting in a replacement element, either green or k and n. Not worth all of the messing about on the 8v as matt said.
