16v Rocker Cover; Anyone who can breathe new life into it?

My rocker cover needs a good sorting out! The finishing on it is not the best. I imagine like most 16v owners out there.

Id like to get it stripped, filled in and restored to what it should have looked like in the first place! Then painted Matt black, with the lines and lettering in metal as it should be.

Does anyone know if there is anyone out there who can do this for a an excellent price. Im not looking to get ripped off!

Might help a few other members out too who want the same thing done?

SC

I quoted Zakh £180 to do the complete job last year. They are are the same people that did mine, you pay cheap prices then expect cheap goods :)

The rocker covers need careful sand blasting, then metal filling, then primer, main coats, finishing touches, then the lines and lettering are milled to a bright finish.

Its not a quick job :( but looks the dogs once done B)

Hey Nick, thats a bit steep, no?

Obviously your a stickler for detail - and i assume you have had it done? Are you happy with it?

How long does the process take please?

Like i said you get what you pay for and they took their time cos im too much of a perfectionist really.

It takes up to 2 weeks but i will send you some pics of mine and you can have a think on it. The expensive job is metal filling as it takes ages and needs to be done correctly otherwise the cover can split!

Im very happy with it, though needing to go over it with baby oil every once and a while attracts a few looks :D

Why do people always think any bodywork/painting work is cheap?

It always bemuses me when I quote people on jobs and they look at me like ive just told them im going to kill them

Paintwork is an involved job and takes alot of prep time.

I just wish people would understand that.

If they want to pay me a small amount for a job, then they will get a Sh*t job.

You get what you pay for.

I would charge a minimum of £100 to strip and repaint a rocker cover for someone. And thats still cheap.

Hey man, its not a case of saying that a job is too expensive or otherwise...most of us on here are not in that line of work so can only hazeard a guess at prices etc.

Its like any line of work, if its not your field of expertise its a bit hit and miss in firming up prices...

Matt would you fill in all the imperfections etc?

Please dont take that personally. I was talking about in general.

Depends on what imperfections it has. Obviously the covers are somewhat rippley under the original paint, thats just how they are from the factory. If you can send me a picture I can tell then. ;)

Talking of rocker covers, i'm wanting to clean up the engine compartment on my 2.6 It really is grimy and don't think it's ever been cleaned from new. The rocker cover is quite basic, so thinking of removing it and repainting it black again. any suggestions for a good paint for this, would prefer spray finished. Also the air filter cover too.

There's a company on our ind est that does powder coating to metalwork, would power coat be ok for this?

With regard to the engine cleaning I thought of using gunk or jiser? and a small domestic type steam cleaner to get into the nooks and crannies. I've used full power industrial steam cleaners before but tend to take paint of if not careful.

Also there's some small oil seepage to the front of the engine block below and above the gasket seal, my brother's a mechanic and didn't think it was coming from the head gasket, so where might it be coming from?

Your input as always will be much appreciated ;)

Julian - powder coating is the best finish you could get done to be honest. I'm just going to spray mine with engine paint though. ;)

Cheers conrad, i was hoping that powder coat was ok as the guys who work in the factory will probably do it for a good drink. just add it to a batch when doing jobs in Black. It does have a nice finish too, my brother thought it would be ok for the job too, but thought i would ask here also.

Hi Bud

The OEM colour is actually a sort of non descript gloss black with the markings highlighted in silver paint! Its applied so thickly it hides all the casting blemishes and blow holes on the metal surface.

The paint we used is a :ph43r: Ssh bmw (whisper) pearl black to highlight the machine finish on the markings. Loks really good in the flesh.

If you go the route of powder coat make sure that you use a high temperature finish as the cover gets really hot next to the exhaust manifold. Also remember to mask the cover carefully where you have mating surfaces as it goes on quite thickly and will cause problems. You can still get the markings machined to give a bright finish so long as you carefully pass a flame over the edges of the plastic coating to seal them.
Much more durable than paint but wouldnt be my choice as you cant polish it!!

Basically I can tell from yours that its been painted before, hence the different layers of flaked paint. Basically the old paint all needs to come off to get it smooth again.

Hi Matt,

The guys who rebuilt the engine painted it i think :D
But i wish i could ask MB what on earth they were thinking sending out cars with the rocker covers looking a tad dodgy to say the least!

They arent too bad from the factory. All I can see on yours is lots of layers of old flaked paint where its been painted again and again.

With the normal factory paint on they are quite smooth.

Matt, that's exactly why i wasn't surprised when DAN57 considered scrapping his
recently crashed 3.0.
I always expect bodywork & paintwork to cost a fookin' fortune, and if my car went
through a hedge backwards (damaging so many panels) i'd think long and hard about saving it.

You're right that you indeed get what you pay for ;)

Bloody hell that rocker cover must be an eye sore when you pop the bonnet

Im so suprised Zakh did not get it done as he is more of a perfectionist than me! im angry at the guy for selling the car to you with things like that wrong, i thought he was better than that :(

But anyway you can simply rub her down and spray but i did not want the silver paint lines as they look naf so i went for the actual metal finish which is where the metal filling came in.

Does anyone know how much a new rocker cover is? im just curious :)
