The 2.5-16 is the largest 4 pot you could bang in but would take a bit of work as any engine conversion would the other option that I would personally consider better would be a M103 3.0 six pot engine I would imagine you could get better power gains for less money when it come to tuning it although they are lovely on an autobox a manula could be an option although I have never liked Merc manual boxes apart from the Getrag and even thats only because they were fitted as standard my cossie is a manual and I think they benefit more from the dogleg box than an auto PS all you auto cossie owner no offence

even putting a 2.5-16v in is a big job.as it has practically nothing in common with the 2.0l......have to change the engine,box,wiring harness and a few other things............if you look on the site,there are posts of people putting 3.0l 6 cylinder merc engines in and 5.0l V8's in

three point ooohhh is the way to go. Lots of torque across the range and far smoother given its a 6 cylinder. Much cheaper for parts and easier to keep running. I am a bit biased though, the 16v's are of course excellent engines. |

M103 = torque. M102 16v = horsepower. Take your pic. |

Whats the bhp of a 16v, around 200 ? The 3.0 is 188 so there isnt that much between them, the m103 is a lot heavier though I would imagine. I would love to see a torque curve of the two engines next to each other. Looking forward to retro to see how they compare on the strip

I think the M103 could be tuned for a lot less ££££ with a lot more gains per pound I mean just on the top end you could have the head ported and polished stick a set of throttle bodies on there and a custom exhuast with a six branch and I reckon you would have a much quicker motor especially on a manual box It would be interesting to see how they compare on the strip in standard form I used to have a 1990 2.6 sportline I always wanted to slap a 3.0 in that but that old 2.6 engine was so smooth and reliable I thought it foolish to mess with

Well bang for the buck would have to be an old 2.3-8v M102 out of a W124, you could prob pick one up dead cheap and its about 140something hp for a straight engine swap.. but why do a halfass job when you can do a proper job! The 3.0 six would probably be the handiest all round swap, nice power and torque as standard, and then you could always just turbo it have plenty of power with that.. Remember SylteRacings drifty 190 beast? had a turbo-ed M103.. Plenty powerful and plenty sideways. You lucky folk in the UK with your insignificant road tax ![]() Bit if then if you start thinking of performance mods, theres the much more fun and rewarding option of tuning the nuts out of your existing 8v and beating a car of much bigger capacity! (eventually, he hopes.... lol) |

i personally drove a merc with the m103 3.0 and it is amazing engine and it kicks very nice.it may need some lighter pistones and stuff though. and a bit of turbo wouldn't hurt. i also drove the 3.0 24 valved engine and it was much much powerfull. |
