Hi. Still getting to grips with the changeover between my old diesel and my new petrol. So here' yet another question from me. My 190E starts brilliantly, but does have a tendency to stall if you try to set off straight away without it warming up properly, and without using a bit of revs. If it does stall, and I try to restart it, I have to use a bit of throttle to get it to start and then the revs drop right down to 0 and it stops again. The only way I can get the engine to stay running is by gently easing the revs up to 750-100 rpm and holding my foot in that position for a minute or two. Just wondered what could be causing this as the engine runs very well otherwise. I've had the car about a month now, and fully intend to replace the plugs, maybe leads, air filter, oil, and oil filter, and the gearbox oil and gasket fairly soon. As I've no idea when they were last done. (bought off dealer, who'd had it as a trade in) |

First of all what is it a 16v or an 8v A service would be good also when you service it presuming you do it yourself get some carb+injector cleaner the stuff you get in a pressurized spray tin and while the car is running with the air filter off spray some in to the air intake whilst keeping the rev up slightly (otherwise it will stall) this should clean any gunk out of the air intake system you will need to spray quite a bit though (spray for around 10 seconds and make sure you keep it running whilst doing it) if that does'nt work then you may need to look at your cold start valve presuming it is fuel injected. It's an 8v fuel injectionas it's a later 89 model. I didn't think they ever made a 2.0 16v? You're right. I'm doing a service myself, as soon as i get a nice weekend day. (no garage!) I'll try and get hold of some injector cleaner. Any recommended brands or places to buy? |

No they never made a production 2.0 16v nice thought though Any motorspares should sell it I normally buy it in bulk but I have forgotten what brand it is will find out later when I get to the workshop but I used to use Megapower and that was quite good If your car has a Cat on the exhuast make sure what you buy state on the tin that it is catalytic converter freindly most of the stuff nowadays is but it never used to be!

On a bit of a tangent here but... How easy would it be to put a 16v head on a 2.0? An what else would need to be done to make it a reality, if possible? |

TBH not sure if it could be done at all !!! Don't think so but... The bore on a 2.0 is smaller than a 2.3 or 2.5 so your block would need to be bored and to what extent this could be done I don't know I think it would easier to tune your 2.0 rather than try the above

Did MB ever make a 2.0 16v on one of their other models that could be transplanted. Otherwise what tuning mods can be achieved and what power output can be expected. I think the standard 2.0 8v was meant to be 122 BHP? |

Theres the M111 2.0 16v engine found in the W202 C-class and probably other models, to be honest though its not regarded as a smooth engine, its a bit harsh when revved etc.. there are better options out there I think. If you have the wedge and the tools/time/know how, you could try get a M271 engine from the W203 C-Class, its a 1.8 (I think) 16v, but is available with various power outputs (due to different compression ratios, supercharges vs n/a) etc.. e.g. the M271 found in a C230 Kompressor W203 will be the supercharged 1.8 (again not 100%) in the maximum state of tune, vs the C180 W203 which will have a bog standard n/a 1.8 M271.. Its meant to be quite a nice engine! But as for the lumpy tickover, I'm no expert on the KE-injection but plenty here are, Im sure they will help. May be that "5th injector" or cold start valve (not sure) |

Where does it idle when cold, and where does it idle when hot (I mean at what revs)? Let us know if you fix it! |
