My handbook recommends SAE 5W-30 10W-30 However i don't know if this is semi or fully synthetic or mineral.

Also what is the approx cost for 5 litres on average, there's so many dirrerent oils, and giving ma a headache

Some oils i'm looking at on flea bay are around £25 to £30 for 5 ltr delivered is this over the top and or cheaper from the likes of Halfrauds?

Hi Bud.

Personally I would use a semi-synthetic oil in the car. Fully synthetic in an older engine is a waste of money as the wear will negate the benefits of the lower viscosities.

Makes are not that critical and most of the higher costs of the well known oils are the result of large advertising budgets!

If you can get it locally one of the better oils is Morris Oil.

Been around as long as Castrol and supply all sorts of lubricants to industry!

Hope this helps Mate!

Never heard of Morris oil before, but like the info in the link. I'll have a hunt and see if i can purchase on-line.

Not much in the way of auto car shops around here, although there's a small auto bits, and top gear, but don't have a wide selection of oil, just all this trendy stuff.

hello mate!

With the 2.6's iv had, iv always used 10 40 semi syn oil and that done the job. but when i got my current 2.6 manual I got a bit picky with the oil going in, the last 4 oil changes have been Castrol Magnatec 10 40 semi, which is a good oil i was pleased with.
When the next 4000miles came round i decided to try there 'high mileage' which is a 15 40 semi, my car is just not ready for this oil, i think its a bit to thick, so ill be going back to the 10 40 semi in the next 2 weeks.

Hii, i use fully synthetic oil 5-30 (GM) and the car runs perfect, it depends on the condition of your car. If the engine is in good condition its ok, if not use again synthetic but a bit thicker ex. 15-40

Cheers guys

I read elsewhere that many 2.6 owners use 10W-40 it's just that MB recommend 5W-30

I'm just coming up to 94K and have noticed a small oil leak on the front left hand side of the engine, above where the alternator is located. Seems to be coming from the Gasket seam, but could also be coming from the top of the timing chain casing, it's difficult to see without removing rad & fan.

So until i sort this out, maybe a standard oil will suffice.

Anyond had a leak like this on their 2.6

They all leak. As long as it's just v. minor weeping around the gasket don't get excited about it.

I tried 5-30 once, but as the engine was getting on in years, it just burnt it a bit faster. Went back to 15/40 and it was much happier...

I went for the Morris Multivis, really liked the company site info. Managed to order 10 litres from fleabay for £23.00 inc postage, the ebayer offers postage on additional orders at £1.00 so quite a good deal. although he spelt miltivis with a v :)

If 5W30 was your choice then you may have a few issues rather soon :ph43r:

10w40 is the one!

Hi cossie

My 2.6 manual states SAE 5w/30 10w/30 but a few members have mentioned 10w/40 is this because of the mileage and older engine. I can always re-order as the stuff i've ordered can be used on the company vans and trucks.

its because of your millage and you also dont know what was previously put in tbh. It will make your engine smoke a bit and may cause problems eventualy with your seals ect so 10W40 is safe ground tbh :)

Yeah, been reading some previous posts both on here and on the Merc site. Also Lynn in her infinite wisdom looked the previous service history, and mostly used has been Shell helix 10/40 and last service Shell helix plus 10w/40 and some time back ESSO Ultron used by MB

Think i'll take your advice, cheers cossie :)
