Hello all! I have my car back on the road after a long time (greater than a year) The car is running as well as can be expected after such a long time and it's slowly beginning to behave like it's good old self. Problem is under acceleration specially when the ebngine is cold it is really jumpy say when accelerating from 30 to 40mph. I think the engine itself is in good nick, good oil pressure, fluid levels, free reving etc.. it is real noisy though, sounds nearly like a diesel! My guess as to problem as a non-mechanic is that it's not getting the right amount of fuel and/or air so as a matter of course I'll be replacing tomorrow the air filter, fuel filter and checking most pipes lines for clogging. There is also at startup a clicking coming from under the passengers seat (sounds like a relay) coupled with an electrical whirr coming from the back which I haven't traced yet. Could it be the fuel pump? Any suggestions as to what could be causing me this grief would be greatly appreciated! thanks |

If your getting a humm or a whirr from the left back it sounds like the fuel pump, The pump and filter are located under neath on the rear left, you'll see a black plastic cover there behind that. If you can hear the pump inside in the car, well then it's seen better days, Change it.

Well I'm doing the fuel filter this afternoon and i'll take a look at the pump, thanks for the advice. So what is under the passengers seat in these cars, sorry I'm new! I know I should just have a look but sometimes it helps to know what it is you are looking for! Thanks again |

ok thanks. I changed the fuel filter just now and i've a sneaking suspicion that it is the fuel pump on it's last legs, I'm gonna leave it for a week or so and see how i get on but I might be doing the fuel pump next saturday, (possibly with the power steering pump!) I'll let you know how I get on. The engine still sounds rough, like a truck! are all 190 engines that noisy! maybe it's just cause I'm used to driving Jap cars I'll have to investigate the cabin clicking noise, really sounds like a relay or something, I'll post an update when the prob is solved. Thanks |

Check your timing chain is tightned properly as this will cause a rattling noise and if loose, could slip, and cause damage to the engine.

This could indeed point to a worn Timing Chain or tensioner. My car sounded rather rough and raw before i had it done, then sounded zippy and new when i got it back. As Matt said, ignore this at your peril - worth getting checked out. |
