I have a 2.0 ltre Auto 190E which is giving off some heavy petrol fumes particularily on starting up. Last month new Fuel Filter, Air Filter, Plugs etc all changed. I travelled down South at weekend on 800 mile round trip, as usual car went like a dream but did notice my fuel economy was quite poor normally get 36-39mpg but this time it was more like under 30mpg. There is no real smell from within the car as I'm driving but am aware of it if window down or when you get out of the car. Any ideas!!!! |

having a diesel i dont know
but where are the fuel lines on these petrol versions ? inside or outside ?......either way have you looked down the whole length of the fuel line to make sure it hasnt corroded and the pipe is damp somewhere ,where it might be seeping through ?

Yes check the fuel lines on the under side of the car. Also any under the bonnet. As you seem to notice it more on start up, i would suspect it to be a feed pipe(from the tank)and not a return pipe(to the tank) as the feed pipe will obviously be pressurised first. But in any case, check or get it checked out. And do it soon mate, the last thing you want is a burnt out wreak Stu |

Check your fuel filter unions. The fuel filter is in a black plastic box with the fuel pump on the underneath of the car (back passengers side near the wheel well, follow the fuel lines!). There is a drain from that black plastic casing so you might notice fuel streaks around this drain area. Same thing happened me last week. Just need to tighten the unions with a spanner and make sure everything is nice and tight |

I was experiencing the same petrol smell recently and spent ages checked all pipes ,unions etc, couldnt find cause until opened boot and and found a bottle of t-cut had spilt. Only noticed smell when getting in and starting too. Just a thought as we all have crap in our boots. |
