I'm trying to get to the bottom of my horrible, horrible, horrible petrol consumption problems (18-19mpg city driving) and have a couple of questions... First off I changed the oil and filter recently and noticed that the rubber hose that connects from the bottom of the air filter housing to the very top of the engines head (about 15cm long) was disconnected. This would explain all the oil thats been thrown up into that area and the engines horrible behaviour on cold startup -but i couldn't get it to 'pop' back into place (under the air filter housing). I tried for a good twenty minutes using fairy liquid and all, is there an easy way to do this as surely it has to be reconnected after every oil change when you take the air filter assembly off! The next question involves the charcoal cannister: where is it? What does it do? Will replacing it help my MPG problems. The last question is a bit of an iffy one. The last owner of the car was a bit of a spa as I'm finding out after all the things I've noticed wrong or strange with the car. One of the things he said was that for the last NCT (MOT) he had the engine "de-tuned" to pass the emmisions test and never had it "re-tuned" can anyone make sense of what he is talking about and could that be affecting my fuel consumption too? The mechanic that did that is not available for questioning! Also any other suggestoins are most welcome!! P.S. It's a '87 190E 2.0 Automatic |

The pipe going off the air filter to the engine, is the engine breather pipe, that channels all the fumes back to get burnt off that build up in the cam, if you cannot get it back on buy another from mb for £4.47. dont bother trying to fit the old one back on. |

Both of my cars only do about 18mpg round town. Mercedes are historically relatively heavy on fuel. |

Ah, as for de-tuning he probably means he had the mixture set to lean it out a bit. Stick it up a little and it may make a little difference. |

Conrad -thanks, answered all questions and quickly too! So I'll just have to get used to the price of driving a benz, luckily my insurance halved this year the difference will be spent on fuel!! |
