I was looking at a load of pictures of these the other day. Haven't thought about them much before, perhaps cos they were LHD. How different is the body from standard? Arches & skirts; anything more subtle changed? Has anyone on here ever driven one?

Is the build quality of this model up to much?

Oh yes - W201 and then some.
W124 launched shortly after the 190 and was produced in roughly the same era (ending
in 1995 apart from the convertible) - regarded as the absolute pinnacle of executive cars. Interiors are just lovely.

Wikipedia entry:

Mercedes also included a sport version of the W124, the 500E, created in close cooperation
with Porsche. Each 500E was hand-built by Porsche, being transported back and forth between
the Mercedes plant and Porsche's Rossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen during assembly---taking
a full 18 days to complete each model.
Between 1991 and 1995, Mercedes/Porsche built a total of 10479 500E's.
Of these, 1505 of the "super" sports sedans were imported into the USA between 1992-1994, or
roughly 500 cars per year of importation.
Called the 500E through model year 1993, in 1994 it was face-lifted along with the rest
of the range and renamed the E500.

The 500E had a 32-valve V8 engine delivering 322 hp (240 kW) and 354 ft·lbf (480 N·m), with
the engine being derived from the R129 500SL roadster.
Sports car braking performance also came from SL components: front SL500 300mm disks
with 4-piston calipers came installed on the 1992 and early 1993 cars.
The later 1993, and all 1994 cars came with the upgraded 320mm set taken from the 600SL.
Rear brakes on all years were 277mm brakes from the 500SL. In the USA, the 500E
came fully-loaded, with the only options available to the buyer being a dealer-installed
CD changer and an integrated telephone.
The 500E was only available as a four-seater, with the four leather seats supplied by
Recaro (the fronts heated).

Called the "Velvet Hammer" by Mercedes, and a "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" by the press, performance
tests of the day yielded impressive results: 0-60 mph (97 km/h) times of 5.5 seconds and
accelerateration through the quarter-mile (0.4 km) in 14.1 seconds at 101 mph (163 km/h).
Top speed was electronically limited to 155 mph (251 km/h).
It was rated at 14 mpg (16.8 L/100 km) in the city and 17 mpg (13.8 L/100 km) on the highway.

With its aggressive stance: 1.5 inches wider track, 0.9 inch lower profile, flared fenders, side
skirts, front air-dam and wide tires, the 500E is easily distinguished from its lesser brethren.
Because of its look, limited numbers, hand-built construction, and unique pedigree, the 500E
is already considered a "classic," even within Mercedes-Benz.

Brilliant write up, sounds a fantastic car, never realised the car's pedigree. Would love one, but mpg maintainance etc not realistic, so i'll stick with the 2.6 lol Really impressed though, thanks for the info :)

Mate build quality is second to none any 124 build quality wise wipes the floor with any merc to date

Personal opinion though but I think its damn true :)

W124 was a great car though did have problems at the end of production life cos of cost cuts (1996) if you want one best year is 1994 tbh. This goes expecially for the 500E as it was changed and power was reduced slightly for reg reasons (E500)

I doubt you will have many build quality issues with any 500E/E500 they were all virtually hand built

Allthough I do agree build quality took a slight dive towards the end of the 124 career as a mid size for Merc ;)

the 500's build quality was consistant throughout productin but did go through a minor facelift where it was watered down very slightly so the best ones are the early ones.

when i was getting tyres for my 190 the other day a guy asked if it was mine . i told him it was and he told me he loved mercs and had just sold a 500e.
i thought at first yes of course you did then he brought his new car in SL55 AMG.
found out from the guys in tyre shop he is loaded but really down to earth and they remember the car and said it was awesome!
he said if he still had it i could have taken it for a drive

he he he na the fevo is stayin ..

tbh the 2.3 16v would have stayed..

but after the accident it would have been a crashed 2.3 16v...... yeh another one..

so i thought the bits were sittin in various yards ... so why not get the ultimate look with a damn fine base .... which it was b4 tbh

it was one of the best 2.3 16v around... condition wise..

and see where we go ... now i love evo 11 but i love evo1 even more.... oh so much more.... its just so much purer ....is that a word....

evo 1 is the ultimate imho....

and before ne one says buy an evo1 one then .... yeh i could of but i went with what i had...

see the evo motor for me aint where its at.... if i want one i will buy one simple !!!!

cant afford it but if i want it i will buy it..... ne wayz....( thatz why im alwayz skint .)

there are much better engine variants avilable tbh...

and if i was goin the purist route yeh theres a few around ...\

but i love the base im workin from...

end off.

now then e500 500e.

oooh i love w124`s

allways have and alwayz will i xpect had a copla me self dad had a few when they were in the dealers as 2 year old examples etc ..... no more tho

sorry to say ...

had a nice ice blue ( not sure of the color code) amg rep...

jeez it was nice

low and i mean really low an he was like 60 years old..... i used it a bit loved it..

( hes had 6.9 sel an the like....
!!!) now he like 70 yrs old has a couple new c class things in silver....)

but a 500e/ e500

why not have a rhd w124 with all the e500 bts but more ????

hammer or e73 ???

ok not an original e500 etc but better....

will see what i can find.... he he he

went of on a tangent there sort off.......

wait an see....

Car was (is?) a 300E-24V. It has whats left of a Mosselman Twin Turbo kit on it, which is essentially the manifolds ! The engine and box are currently stock and soon to be ditched. Car runs a Motec 600 Ecu, ERL water injection and an air/water cooling set up, boost is pegged to about 8 psi and gives 330 hp.

In descending order its soon to receive the following mods

AMG C3.6 engine with lightened and balanced crank and ported, polished gas flowed head

C36 'box with V12 internals

2 x Gt28rs '60 turbos

Brabus 6 piston front and 4 piston rear brakes with Alcon discs

K-Mac front and rear suspension kit

AMG period steering wheel :)

Wow B) Massive respect due bow.gif
