The 2.6 has an intermittent misfire on start up. Sometimes it will fire up fine but the other times it seems to only fire on 4 or 5 cylinders until i give it some gas, it then fires on all six but idles at about 2000 rpm for about 5 or 6 seconds then settles down to a normal tickover. I have also noticed that it has an intermitant lumpy tickover. Sometimes it ticks over so smooth i have to glance at the rev counter to see if its still running And then it can sudenly start feeling very lumpy and almost shake the car with how lumpy its ticking over
Any ideas? The last owner recently fitted a new distributer cap but not leads. Im now wondering if any of the leads are arching accros from one to another!!! Il have to take a look at night. Does anyone have any other ideas? Cheers, Stu |

I have the same problem sometimes Stu. And I think it may have something to do with maybe a blocked or sticking injector, or something to do with the fuel meter. |

I did think it may be an injector also. Il try some injector cleaner and see if that helps at all. Also, can anyone tell me where the idle control valve is on the 2.6 engine? Cheers, Stu |

Had the same problem on my 2.6 last year stu, replaced the distributor cap and the rotor arm (both had blackened contacts), changed the plugs for the Bosch Super 4's, and the problem disappeared. Make sure previous owner changed the rotor arm as well as the distributor. Leads are OK and idle is fine, but car does occasionally chug a little when pushing hard on the gas, and mpg is way too low (around about 19.8 for a car that does its share of motorway miles) so feel the mixture is too rich. Is the idle control valve through the hole in the air cleaner box - and does anybody know how to adjust the mixture successfully without resort to the stealership - really want to fix this before my MOT!!! |

My old 2.0 had this problem too, replaced leads and dist cap and plugs, and all was well for a couple of days. Then the problem started again I was advised to use wd40 over all the electrics, which I did, but it still didn't solve it. Then I noticed whilst listening closly to the engine after having trouble starting one morning, a ticking noise, on further examination found that it was coming from where the spark plug goes in to the cylinder, the plug was shorting against the engine block deep in the recess, so I extracted the all plugs and cleaned out the recesses, which were really grimy with oil and dirt deposit, then replaced the plugs. For good measure I then sprayed WD40 right into the spark plug recesses, and astonishingly this worked perfectly, until the following winter that is, when it started to play up again, so I just gave the plugs another squirt of WD40 and it's been alright ever sinse, that was about 4 months ago. I think moisture gets trapped in the plug recess on damp mornings, and if the recess is grimy it holds moisture, so when first starting causes the plug to short. I spent over £50 quid on cap arm leads and plugs trying to slove this problem, that I reckon i didn't really need  as they had all been replaced the year  before |

Rotor arm fixed a similar problem with my old 2.6. On very close inspection, under much magnification, there was a tiny hairline crack in it.... Cheers, Martin |

NO! Thats not the idle control valve. Dont tamper with that, else you will ruin the mixture adjustment and you will find it hard to correct again unless using an exhaust gas analyser. |

Well I changed my plugs the other day for brand new ones, but the problem does still appear, so I shall get a new distributer cap and rotor arm soon, but im still thinking its Injector related. |
