Oh yes.... In spectacular fashion. Was doing 60mph and heard a bang and sparks were flying everywhere.

The back box hung on. It was the mid section that came off. Hopefully it was just a clamp or something.

I don't know. I'm crap with mechanics. Will it need replacing?

That seems to be in ok condition. Its the mid section that is buggered. I think its the other silencer? (I think its a silencer).

are these expensive to replace? Would i be able to get rid of this and just fit a straight through pipe (if that makes sense)

Excuse my poor mechanical knowledge

I've done my home work a bit now. I sort of know what i'm talking about.

The front muffler is fecked. So that whole section needs replacing. Anyone know how much this bit costs? I'd rather have a straight through pipe and bypass this silencer totally.

But can't seem to find one on the net

It's the 2.6 bdw

Before i kill myself. Do you think its safe to drive without back box? It's only 8 miles to the garage but i don't want to blow up on the way

It'll just be really, really loud. There may be an issue with lack of backpressure burning valves, but for 8 miles it should be fine.

Just be aware that fitting aftermarket exhausts can affect the whole way the engine runs - for the worse !

I had a bad experience like this on my 12V 300TE (effectively the same engine as your 2.6 ) with a Powerflow exhaust fitted by RMS exhausts in Prestwick - the exhaust looked superb , was as quiet as the original system as per my request and was well put together and highly polished .

Unfortunately the car lost most of its power low down in the rev band , only getting going above 3-4000 rpm , and constantly fouled its plugs after this exhaust was fitted - obviously the gas flow was not correct .

While I was waiting to have mine fitted , I made the acquaintance of a guy with a MG estate car who could not drive his because of the resonance set up inside the car at certain engine speeds ( he had asked for a 'sporty' sound ) .

I was so fed up , I was going to rip it off and fit the correct exhaust again only the ASD diff failed and I ended up selling the car for spares or repair .

The genuine replacement part from Mercedes-Benz dealer will cost less than you think and will keep your car running as its maker intended . The rear section for my 190E ( 2.0 litre ) was something like £70 from the dealership - so not all that deadly .

hi just read about you exhaust falling off fairly common on the 190 usually takes the back bumper with it,i have had countless exhausts on this 190e i had a cherry bomb motor bike exhaust welded in place of the centre box got fed up of the noise so put a back box on with a three inch bore looked ok and improved performance,am now back to almost standerd, bought a j reg 190 off ebay and drove it fifty mile home with no back box so you will be okay going to the garage,E.C.P do the exhausts for the 190 and are really cheap, change the back rubbers soons you can its the only thing holding the back section up cheers frank

£202.00 full system and ALL Fittings and rubbers, delivered 24 hours later, fitted just like brand new stuff should and i'm really pleased with it.

Genuine BOSAL Exhausts.

Hope this isn't too late and you can save money over Things like Euro Car Parts who quoted me £270+VAT for the exact same parts and that didn't include delivery.

Hope this helps.

It's the 2.6 bdw

you're not going to find a straight pipe from the cat to the rear muffler on the net. just go to a good muffler shop, and have them make a pip from you, from after the Y collector point after the cat, to the rear muffler. cut off that connection from the rear muffler pipe to the center resonator, and have the guy cut the pipe from the rear muffler, and expand it, and slide it into the straight pipe leading into the cat. or just have it straight welded into that rear muffler's pipe. while you're at it, have the muffler guy cut out all rusted/holy parts of your exhaust and replace it with new piping. might as well get it all fixed in one shot

btw thankyoulord (never thought i'd type those words ever), that cat is either for euro 2.6's, or for a 2.3. 2.6's i've seen had a larger cat, with two pipes leading into and out of it.
