Hi, I'm Tommy, a somewhat aged Merc 190 man. Had a few down the years. Just passed on my original one (one previous owner) to my niece who loves it to bits. It was/is a 2.5 diesel, 178k, still going rather well. Currently have a mint 2.5 diesel. 104k on the clock, and desperately needing an osr electric window regulator! Not as smooth as my original 2.5, but in much better shape........mind you, it hasn't towed horse boxes like my number one car..... Also have a mint 68k W124 300 CE in smoke silver. A C250 saloon (which is being sold with 56k on her), and a C250td estate with 114k........and has given me "bother' with the fuel system of late, but we're back on speaking terms now. Future acquisitions will be a mint 2.6 (I hope!). Got the money put away, just need the right car to turn up. Would love a 2.5 16, but good 'uns sooooo hard to find. Based in Central Scotland. |

Thank you! Oh the W124 is a real gem! Got her on classic insurance, and she only comes out to play from March to September! Such an under rated car! I paid a high sum for her 4 years ago (she's a 91)....5,200. But she has every single document going right back to build card, and original purchase receipt. Smaller wheel, bigger fuel tank and fire extinguisher all helped to push her purchase price to a heady 41,000 .......in 91!!!!! But the joy of it all is that the people that splashed the cash back then didn't get the benefits of what they paid for. It's us, the people who have them when they are over 10 years old who reap the benefit of that big investment back then. They didn't buy only style and the badge in the mid 80s to early 90s....they bought engineering integrity. |

Just about to buy a 300CE W124 to go with my 190e (although I think I will come under pressure to sell the 190e from my wife!). I know that it has a couple of faults including a non-working drivers side seatbelt arm (the one that "presents" the seatbelt to you). Does anyone know if these are a common problem/easy fix? Other than that it has some rust on wheelarches which seems to be common to all W124's so I can get that sorted easily and a hole in drivers seat bolster. This latter may be a problem as I suspect replacement interiors for CE's are harder to find but I will live with it for now I think. Any other common problems I should be looking out for? Finally, alloys could do with a refurbish. Does anyone know any reasonably priced companies in North East/Leeds/York area for this? ANy idea what I should be lookingto pay? Cheers Adam |

W124 interiors are actually pretty plentiful. Especially cream leather! As for your seat belt presenter, those were powered by pretty feeble motors, and failure is not uncommon, and a pretty easy fix. And yes, front wing rust is very very common......far more so than on 190s. There tends to be a view that the bigger the Merc, the bigger the rust problems, and I would tend to agree. From where you live, you are positively surrounded by wheel refurbishers. in my humble experience, price is just about universally linked to quality of work. I've had 25 quid a wheel jobs that looked worse than when they went in, and 50 quid a wheel work that was simply stunning. For me, 200 should get you nice job, but as there's more competition down south, you might be able to shave the price a bit. Also remember you might well have to shell out a bit of cash for a "tyres off, tyres back on" service and re-balance. |

Hello and welcome
The 2.6 is a superb car and much less hassle to own than a 16v. The straight 6 is a wonderfully smooth engine that can pack quite a punch when pushed Stu |

Welcome Tommy! I used to have a 1985 230CE with only 65,000 which I loved, but decided to sell in my search for the perfect 190E 2.6. Good luck with your search, the good ones can be hard to find, but you will get plenty of help on this board. Katie |

Thanks for the reply bumpthump. I am guessing that the CE interiors are different from the saloons though - I think all of them have the "split" rear seat that was a sportline option in saloons. And, the front seats must be different to allow access to the back? Would the seat covers be the same I wonder? |

So does that mean that W124s don't have the fuel tank located vertically behind the rear seat? I must admit, a split folding rear seat in my car would be pretty useful... |

I'll have to go check now! Got to admit, if there's a split rear seat, I've never mnoticed it before. This could be embarrassing! |

Hold fire! I may be confusing the issue!
By split seat I mean that some W124's - and I think all Coupe's - have twin rear seats with a central console splitting them - rather than a 3 seater bench. As far as I know the backs of the seat are not split and they dont fold. Apologies for any confusion!! Adam |
