Greetings, Hi everyone. I found your forum today and would like to set up a virtual home here with you as I will be taking ownership of my first Benz in a few months
Trust me you will be sick of me soon, but not in a nuisance way
I hope. The car oh the car.190 E 2.0i it is black with full black leather interior and I think it is the cosworth kit and momo alloys it has on it. The story goes a bit like this. The car was commissioned by a rich oil n gas dude that wanted the full 190 cosworth look and 100% full black leather interior but with out the race engine. It has been sitting on a drive with out tax and test for about 3 years now and is badly needing TLC. I either have a full on restore job to do or a minor fix up and MOT or its a strip and scrap deal. I so hope it is not the last one. As you can guess I will be asking questions and posting lots here soon I plan on photo documenting it as I go starting with a sad and sorry picture of the car sitting in its present location on a drive with 4 flat tyres. at least the battery was removed! The black paintwork looks closer to green from the stuff growing on it. And some of the lower rust spots look scary, but that is because I lost an Audi 100 Quattro to rust that separated the shell from the sill the full length of the passenger side (cries, for that was an awesome car). The owner (used to build and own a 250cc race car team, used to restore Grand Tourismo's and very early BMW's) assures me it will not take much to prep and MOT it! In fact he is 100% certain that with a charged battery installed, quick check of all fluids it will start and offer to move. I am a bit sceptical. We shall see. But his expertise is not to be mocked! He is selling up everything and moving away. Thats my hi post and why I am reading these forums. |

Gents you are all a credit to these forums respect.gif Thanks for the welcome. I plan on spending this Sat at the car (its 50 miles away) to get more than just a walk around it. Hopefully we can start the engine and see whats what etc. I am trying to coordinate a car trailer as well with the hopes of getting it back here. And the first session of pics shall be taken as well Do you know what? I have not once ever driven any kind of Mercedes! To say I can not wait is understated. I will see if I can find details online for the 250cc class race cars. But do you know the 'ATOM' car type thing that Top Gear like? That reminds me of the 250cc cars. |

Cheers
Well I could not wait for Sat so I snuck in by and grabbed this pic with my phone. Not a good pic but it does depict the kind of clean up job needed. The sorry and sad picture: ![]() Can anyone advise me on these wheels? Are they aftermarket or was this an option for 190E? |

Almost certainly not an option. Not sure what they are though. Good to see your going to get her back on the road rather than in a ditch. Is the paint all rough or is it just the pic, or dirt ? |

The paint has a film of green growth on top of it. I think it is a kind of algae! but that is a total guess
From standing there it looked like it would clean up fine with some healthy elbow greese and a lot of time given over to it. I think I spotted a momo badge on the wheels, well I am going to have to live with them for a while, for me they look ok though not to to baseball capish etc if you no what I mean. |

This could be a very nice project. Keep a diary with pictures to keep us updated, the wheels are aftermarkets and it is not hard to find a set of originals, looks like my car when i first bought it, it had spiders everywhere, green stuff on it, and had a leaky sunroof causing damp to get in the car. Does anybody want to see a sorry cossie when i first picked it up? |

Will try that. As for next i dont really know, i think i might put her on the bay or keep her alittle longer, i really want a black one, i really dont want to go into a reshell as the shell om my cossie is very good. There is alot of surface rust around the suspension, so might overhaul that and clean it up. Krilin i think you have got a really nice project there and its my fav colour, just love 199. |

***I am uploading and editing this post on and off all day :)*** Well it has been while since I posted this thread and now I actually have the car at home. It has spent all this time at a garage in a Q waiting to get tested. It passed that with very minor things like exhaust, tires and a brake pad clean up and dust off. Now I have had the time and chance to clean it up a bit and bravely explore the kit I got some nasty findings. I have put right some faults it had like a snapped boot catch striker, a rear door not opening from the outside and a bit of dashboard screw back together stuff as whomever stripped out the audio system could not be arsed to put it all back together. Anyway if I upload pictures of the nasties will you guys critique, comment and offer some recommendations for me? First concern is the exhaust system it's not going to last long siting that low! Can it be mounted higher? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is the nasty rust stuff of dooom! That killed all my mk1 Golfs ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It is the repair work in these above pictures that I am worried about and not sure how to tackle. I can not do this work myself as I just have not got the skills or training in this area! |

Lots of piccys please
As for the exhaust system, you may have the wrong size rubber rings hooked on there, or they may have snapped of stretched, very minor and can be fixed. Did she clean up well? |

That wheel is worth alot of money i've seen just the wheel go for £100-200. Lucky you full leather cossie seats. Dont look to bad, i think the grinder is needed along with alot of filler then a rattle can spray. You say that you dont have any skill, but you could get hold of a grinder and remove all the panels, lights etc and start grinder every piece of rust you see. That does not take effort or skills to use a grinder, then you can get filler mix it with hardner and spread it on, buy some sandpaper and rub it down, i think you can get that far then use carbon paper to rub it all down, primer it/ use rust preventer underneath the primier and then paint. If you feel confident do it yourself and you will be fine at least you can say you done it, its fun i like doing all the work myself. |

Yeah I absolutely love those seats and not just to sit in as I think the styling of them is just brilliant. i found the transceiver under the bench for the car phone system but I have no idea how to make it all work so its staying in place for novelty as there are little speaker and microphones all over the car, makes me like saying 'Groovy Baby' I have the aerial for it as well

Thats fantastic Lewis as in one paragraph you have made it seem so much less daunting. As it happens I do have skills with a grinder as I served time as a Saw Doctor. This skilled me up in using any power tool associated with sheet Swedish spring steel for 40 foot long band saws that were 9 inch wide. I got very good with all manners of grinders and with a gas torch for cutting/brazing/soldering/welding/tempering So to say not skilled was bad of me I am also chainsaw certified but not to much wood on the car
But body work on a car for some reason freaks me. |

nice one
good ole b&q (thats actually fraking genius)thanks for that mate I will def pull them off as the rear cards are not secured below and I got the grey hangers that were glued on to the cards removed. From the door not the cards lol as they had decided to seek out a new lease life in a solo act with the door :ph43r: So I was going to take the cards off one at a time and re glue those hangers back on and I will now be putting the 'cra_arc method' into play when I re install them. hmmm just a thought about getting a set of scrap doors from a breaker and using that as a jig to clamp the cards onto for the glue work. Providing the doors would be next to nothing, or just one door and cut it up to be left with the top channel that the card seats into so I can mould round that and clamp it in place. |

ok what i did ... make sure you get friendly with a good body shop as they will have a hot glue gun for stickin the plastic hangars back on the cards normal glue is crap they have the stuff or use some really haevy bonding type stuff that wont sink into the card... for the leather .. try and seal it back down as far as poss and as neat as poss .. dont try and re stretch it.. to its proper position as it will be under tension and tend to wanna pull free again ... no prob if it dont go all the way back as any gaps will be covered by the plastic strips... once stuck good and firm all along the edge you can even staple it after ! bend the card so its as near perfect shape as is poss .( the top lip etc where it fits into door ) then be real carefull puttin them back on as not to rub the leather edges and start em peeling again.. once on tap in the plastic strips to create a seamless unpeeled look they should be a real tight fit in the channels if not space em or use little plastic wedges that cant be seen to create a pressure fit... mine have been fine for a while now ... im postin this advice in the orig thread also for peeps .. good luck mate
