All I can say Is rather you then me...
Get a decent shell :)

^what he said, verbatim. ;)
Many of tidy late 1.8s out there for less than £1k, i think you gotta
call it a day on this body.

So far it definitly two front doors, two front wings. Probadly too much already.

Forget the doors and wings mate they can be bought and replaced day in day out. Its the rot on the chassis and inner body that writes this car of IMHO :(

Like Julian, i do admire your persistence but unless you have very very deep pockets or can do all the work yourself, then id do what the others have said and try and re-body the running gear into a solid body. If you can, try and find a valver with a fecked engine but good body. That way it stays a proper 16v and not a modded 1.8 or 2.0 etc...

I do feel for you mate and i know it must be hard to give up on it after you have spent your hard earned cash on it but it will only cost you much much more in the long run to try and rid that shell of all the rust.

Rust like that on a car is like an iceberg, what you see on top is 80% worse underneath  :(

i disagree..........if you're a true enthusiast, isnt a part of that going further and do more than jo public to keep them on the road ?

welding work that i have done to my car

both sills, all 4 jacking points
all 4 jacking points on the floor
both inner wings, roughly where the water bottle sits
both headlight fixing points and adjustment brackets
both "A" pillars where it meets the floor behind the wings
boot hinge and strip in between rear windscreen and boot
rear mounting point for the drivers seat

and because of a crash in march 06......a full passenger side rear quarter panel

and do you know something i dont regret doing any of it,in fact enjoyed it to see a car put back to roadworthy condition when most would have written it off :driver:

another thing is,at least i know its solid now......because how many times has someone bought a car that looked in great condition only to find its a white elephant ?

I admire your work mate i realy do B) But you did the work yourself. Just imagine how much all that work would have cost you if you had to pay for it to be done :o

Well I have to say that's extremely enthusiastic Shrekky and fair play to you for achieving that. If burger wants to do all that and has the patience time money skills and enthusiasm to see it through then I'm sure he'll have all members admiration. Nothing's impossible and I've seen cars restored in a hell of a lot worse condition, but they're cars that aren't easily replacable say like TR5's 4's or even older cars and have value when completed. Personally I would take the easy way out and replace with a decent shell and concentrate on keeping that particular car in excellent condition ie prevention being better than cure.

You're obviously a great enthusiast, you'll find an old boiler one day and want make a steam engine out of it

It's great there's such varied opinions on this though, as at least if burger goes ahead he knows what he could be letting him self in for. Any which way he'll have all our support for sure.

I reckon he'll be hunting for a cheap welder quite soon

no it was on ebay its on this website located in hampshire. Check the previous threads. All i can do it strip as much as i can take more photos and put them up on this thread. I won't spend any money on repairs until i can see the full horrors. Then i will have to see sense. So far it definitly two front doors, two front wings. Probadly too much already.

Hi, i have spent in excess of 30k rebuilding my 190 16v, some people say i am mad , others call it a beautiful car that they would never part with ,
the choice you make is yours 100% no one can make it for you and at the end of the day you will only do what you want in the end anyway! you WILL spend a fortune fixing it , but if its what you want 'do it'
in my experience i wouldve sourced a better car in the first place and started with that after cutting my losses , BUT i didnt and ive ended up with a beautiful car (that im scared to use in case some plank hits it)
The choice is yours my friend!

to visit my car n this virtual maze go to bebo.com and search for 'a5llx'
anybody like minded as far as cars go check it out too there is one of our own on my friends list, click add to friends and i will accept
Thanks ASH

thanks to all who have responded to this thread. I am going to get a lad i know who works in a bodyshop to give me the final answer on this but from talking to him on the phone he reckons it a definite body swap. So i will take it from there. Then i will be back on to ye looking for help in doing that. THis is some impressive website with people generous with their knowledge thanks for the advice. I have even enjoyed the bit of dismantling even with all the rust imagine!

Later,

P.

Burger, give Ross (Cosmo 2516) on 0853996254. He's in Co.Kildare has several 190's 2.3's & 2.5's, possibily he has a good shell etc. Worth a call.

Nothing, but nothing , is unrepairable, but the thing is, what it will be worth.

However, if your thing is to bring something back from the dead, then there is a huge amount of satisfaction to be gained, knowing that everytime you look at it , you know it's all your work.

As a project, to practise newly gained , or resurrected old skills, this is a great car to work on.

TBH,I would re-shell, if, as you say your mechanicals are good, then why not make one good car from two? Take this best from both, or get rid of the worst from both.

I have seen some amazing re-builds, by companies such as Crossthwaite & Gardner who have been given a couple of tea chests of bits, and two years later an Auto Union single seater emerges.

My advice to you , is to ignore everybody elses advice, do what your heart says.

If it is "just" surface rust, then try 32% Hydrochloric Acid. then rinse off thoroughly and seal.

Use all safety measures.and nessesary precautions.

This is a hard one. when i first looked at the thread i thought get rid of it and get one with no/less rot but as i was reading through the reply s i thought about my car and if i discovered all that rust and rot on mine i would fix it. don't think i could just get rid of it.

Your only restrictions are your imagination......however Getrag 'boxes were designed for track use, they are massively strong and can take huge power upgrades without problem.

Good luck.

Just to conclude this thread i ended up selling this car for spares/repairs to a lad. Ended up losing out a bit on it but didn't have the funds to try to repair it and was afraid to put to much money into it just incase it didn't work out. The End. Of this anyway. Still got a mad goo on me for a cosworth anyone got a good one going for cheap!!!

Sounds like a wise move Burger. I'll say this, is there ever such a thing as cheap car that's 20+ years old? I reckon you get what you pay for. If it's a good 16V your after start thinking £3,000 plus minimum imo.
