Hi! I am 61y.I know quite a bit about North American cars-- owned my first car 1962. I have lost count of how many cars I have owned and worked on.. My favorite was a 1969 TR6, that I bought new when I finished University. Unfortunately, it was not ready for the salty roads in Nova Scotia and rusted out in 4 years. Until now, I have never owned a Mercedes. Two weeks ago I bought a 1991- 190e- 2.3-auto, that was just imported from Japan. It is MINT condition inside and out -- 109000 km showing on the odometer. I have been driving a 96 Lincoln Town car for many years so I am having to get use to the compact size AND particularly the right hand drive. So far, I am having great fun with my new toy, it is really growing on me and I want it to work well. I believe this car was rarely used and probably very little in the last 5 years or so. I had it go through a thorough safety check and low cost tune-up. ie: plugs, distributor cap, wire check, some new hoses, oil change, air filter.-- not at a Mercedes dealer. I have noticed the following problems. (1) Slight high-pitched howl from rear area on highway when car is under no drag from back pressure during coasting or pull from engine in acceleration (rear-end parts?) (2) Very, difficult to start hot or cold. It tries to start and fires, but it seems to be starving for gas. Once it starts, it is okay except for a rough low idle until it warms up. If you shut it off after a good warmup drive it will start ok (if you try it right away), but if you leave it for over 3-5 minutes- then it is hard to start again. This is really aggravating! (3) I find the shift of gear from 1-2 is occasionally felt by a "jerk" (4) No cold air as compressor is not coming on and it is R12 system.(6) No operation manual and all signs and labels in Japanese or German.(7) Very annoying interior plastic odor. All advise greatly appreciated! -- Don

Hi and welcome,

Like your ID tag and the name of the town you're from. You should get loads of advice on this site. The high pitched whine is possibly your rear diff telling you it wants some fresh oil. I'm sure some one will confirm one way or other.

Enjoy your 190...

Welcome, i'm so glad to hear you've achieved Mercedes ownership at last!
My dad bought his first Mercedes at the age of 55. That was ten years ago, and for the
past two years or so, that Mercedes 190E has been mine! :D

I'm not much use in the mechanics department, but there has been a lot of discussion
in the Technical section regarding both starting trouble and rough idling lately, so
i would direct you there to get reading.
This forum has many subjects covered several times over, so please don't take it
the wrong way when some of us ask new members to search for answers before posting
lists of questions...

As for the interior odour, it sounds strange - does the plastic appear to have been refinished
in any places? Old Mercedes cars usually smell lovely their whole life.
