Hello, all. I have decided to join your board as I will soon be the owner of an '88 metallic-grey (or whatever Mercedes called the colour) 190E 2.3L/Auto with 219,000 km on the odometer, that was supposedly well maintained by the previous owner before they sold it off to my mechanic. I was offered it for a mere $350, which I could not refuse, so I intend to buy and restore it to as close to original condition as I can manage. Despite having sat in my mechanic's yard through one summer and two winters, it still starts and moves under it's own power, after I added fresh fuel, charged the battery, and unstuck the brake pads from the rotors. The interior is also in pretty good condition, though there are a few hairline cracks on some plastic and wood trim, some minor damage to the leather, and some of the accessories and switchgear no longer works (the radio is dead, as is the retractable antenna, and only the driver's power window works: sunroof works fine fortunately, as does the HVAC). Unfortunately, there's some serious corrosion damage to the right-front fender and the right rocker panel, and no shortage of surface rust on the underside components, especially the suspension. Also there's a gas...sorry, petrol leak that starts dripping down the left rear suspension and onto the wheel as soon as the car is started. Some rodent got under th hood as well, as there are droppings on the engine and damage to the sound deadening material on the firewall, though fortunately no sign of a nest or electrical damage. All the fluids look good, though I'll definitely change them anyway. Next weekend when I prop the car on stands to do a more detailed inspection underneath, I'll also post some pictures and ask for advice on how to proceed from there, especially since this is the first time I have actually attempted restoring a car, and I have no prior experience with the 190 either. |

Welcome
From what i hear these cars are a pleasure to work on, provided you have basic tools and some off-road space. (i have neither, so can't really comment). You got it at a good price alright, try and post some pics if you can and i'm sure we can chip in with advice

Well, lucky for me I have both tools and space. I'll probably fix any mechanical issues while the car is still up at my mechanic's place, since he has more tools than I do and lets me use them at will provided I return them to where I found them, plus it's always useful to have someone experienced around just in case. However, I could probably do the cosmetic repairs (which will likely comprise the majority of this project) in my own garage. Anyway, thanks for the warm welcome folks, and I should be able to get those pictures for you by the end of next weekend. |

UPDATE: I have taken a collection of pictures of the interior, exterior and underside, and more importantly I have the vehicle's VIN and paint/cladding codes: I'll post everything tonight when I get home from work, or tomorrow morning at the latest. Stay tuned. |
