Hi gang, joined the forum as im looking for my first merc and looking at 190's, Going to le mans this year which is a week on friday and really want to take a merc down there. Have been looking on ebay the last couple of weeks and havent found anything for the right price with auto box as of yet. Just wondered if there is anything i need to be considering when buying one. I know the cars are pretty much bullet proof but wondered if there are any preferences to which model might be better for long motorway journey.....etc Hope to here from you soon. |

2.6 auto or less power 2.0 auto better fuel consumption. The 2.6 though is the dogs in comparison
Super fast when you want it. Super smooth, you need to drive one to believe how good they are.

If your doing alot of miles then it has to be the 2.5 190d. There are very good examples around, what price have you in mind? |

It depends on what engine size you want. Do you want a car with good mpg? There are good solid runners out there below £500. The areas you do need to look at for is rust around the rear arches boot well and floor, rear windscreen, battery tray and the jacking points. Ebay is a good place to pick up bargins and there are a few on auto trader. A 190d or 2.6 will be best. The 2.6 190's are more money but can be found. |

No better car... A good 2.5D will also be just as quiet inside as a petrol version when warmed up, if not quieter. Really. It's a smooth engine too... |

Stu is right you need at least £500 for a decent 190 with a good spec and good mileage. There are some complete dogs out there so be carefull. I'd say spend no less then £500 on a 190 otherwise you will not be happy with it. |

the 2.5d is a great motorway cruiser but even when warm its far louder than my petrols when idling. May be its just mine. A decent 190 should be at least £500 but that doesn't mean you can't get bargains as many in this thread know. My 2.6 was £400, my 2.5d was £200. Both from ebay. The 2.6 is a much better drive but whenever I go any distance I go in the diesel. Its just so much cheaper to run, and they don't seem to know how to go wrong If your in a hurry you may have trouble finding a decent 2.5d, I was looking for ages. I havent driven a 2.0 but by all accounts they seem fast enough. |

Don't rush into it by wanting to have one for Le Mans- or you may end up with a dog. Take your time and you'll get a very good 190 for £600-£700, no real need to spend any more than that so don't, people do spend more but unless it's a cossie that's just a bit silly really. I've had two 1.8s now, first one was £425 the second £660- nothing wrong with either of them really, they're out there just be patient looking- and use autotrader too, be very wary of ebay. The 2.6 is the one to have for sure- but you'll be perfectly happy with a 1.8 or 2.0 as long as you never actually drive a 2.6! The 2.6s are fairly easy to spot though, if you pass a filler station and there's a 190 there- it'll be a 2.6! Good luck with it. |
