Hello from Ireland. I've been trawling through your site (nice BTW!) as I'm hoping to check out a 2.3 16v in kildare tomorrow evening :) Having never had a merc, I'm a bit unsure as to what to look for but never mind! Lots on info in here to get me up to speed. Fingers crossed I don't buy a pup

All the best for now.

Welcome, make sure it starts and idles properly, one of the worst points with the 2.3-16

Checking the insides of the boot, around rear window and sills / jacking points for rust is
also essential.
Interior wear should match mileage, yadda yadda all the usual buying-an-old-car checks

I'm presuming a first time start from cold with a nice even idle speed? The seller did say that it 'burbles' when idling...

No rust at all. Mileage is 120k I believe. Timing chain replaced in Feb, etc. Someone mentioned in passing that at this mileage there might be some serious maintenance required...any truth?

Yes smoothish idle, constant revs, check when hot as well, 120k just run in if it's had regular servicing.
