Hi all,

Well after a fair bit of reaserch, I've decided that a 190 would be the ideal next car for me. I have a Rover 825 which is very nice, but just too big for my use, and there's the rover build quality...

Anyway, I've been on the Rover forum and other various forums and know how very useful (and often entertaining they are) :)

So, my querry, I've had a decent read of things to look for (rust, oil cooler replacement, electrics and steering), and I know the auto box seems to be the recomended choice, but I'm really more of a manual man.

My target is for a 2.0 litre, as the 2.6 are slightly more than i'd like to spend, plus petrol is an issue as I drive to Norfolk a bit...i'm in Surrey.

So my question(s) are, can any give me a ball park figure on milage with the 2.0 - I'm of course more concerned with the motorway figure, as my local driving is pretty modest?

Also, in terms of the engine - are these motors pushrod or do they use timing chains as I can't find much in reference to the dreaded cambelt replacement that dog most other cars? If they are chain...what is the normal recomended replacement and is it a dog to do?

Many thanks and lookforward to being a part of your group!

I'll let others give you an idea of fuel because my 2.0 is a carb so is inherently a lot worse. Although that said I get a good 30-35mpg on the motorway at 75-80mph.
They're chain driven, no nasty cambelt changes or any of that for us! :)
The chain is recommended to be replaced at 100k miles. It's not an awfully difficult job, but that depends how handy and mechanically clued up you are.
If/when you get one we'll have to have a GTG next time you're up in Norfolk!

James, if you're doing a fair bit of m'way, then get a diesel. Yes, I'm biased, but they're immortal, simple and you get a comfortable 40 mpg plus, pushing 50 if driven sympathetically. I'm converting my diesel to veg oil soon so I won't be paying anything for fuel.:o It's got to be the way to go.;) Last year I spent £1250 on fuel, this next year, hopefully, it will be less than £50....

Good luck, whatever route you choose.

Hey,

Thanks for the quick replies. Yeah I have a diesel at the moment, and have considered if I should go for the same in a 190. They do seem a bit more scarce on the ground?

My only real fear is perhaps an irrational concern about injectors...

I think my view is that they key for me is finding the right condition car at the right price, if it is petrol or diesel, i'm not too worried.

Well, if you just want a simple commuting 190 that will be good on fuel then the choice is obvious. The 190 petrol versions can be OK on fuel, but you do need to drive them with a measure of care. With a diesel 190D, you can kick it all over the place and you'll still get good returns. Yes, they're more scarce, but be patient and the right car will come your way. Use Autotrader, look at the MB Enthusiaist mag - or whatever it's called - local paper, etc, etc. They're just as quiet as a petrol 190 - a good one should be - once warmed up, though obviously the diesel engine is more clattery on the outside. I'd aim for a 2.5 for more tug, but the 2.0 has a lot of fans too, due to its lighter engine weight and slightly better fuel consumption. Why would you be worried about the injectors specifically?
