When i dinged my car, the mounting points on one end of my front impact strip broke.

Posted Image

I need to replace the whole strip (black outer cover only), but can somebody tell me:

Which of these ECP items is the part i'm looking for:
- GENUINE 822220070 F/IMPACT PAD 88- ENERGY ABSORBER PAD £28.34
or
- REPLACEMEN 822220080 FRT BUMPER RAIL 190 88-93 190 1988-93 (201 CHASSIS) FRONT IMPACT COVER £22.55

also, removal & fitting instructions if poss, thanks :)

EDIT:
The genuine MB part number for it is 2018851421

This might help Neil,

You will probably have to remove the front bumper to get at the screws that are at either end of the impact strip(rail), apart from the screws I think it just clips in, it does at the back.

Removal and fitting is very easy.

In order to replace the trim, bumper needs to be removed.

1) In order to remove bumper there are 2 x 10mm bolts each end of the bumper
undo them.
2) there are 4 x 13mm nuts under the bumper near the chassis legs, 2 on each side.

Then the bumper should come off, Also beware there is a trim in front of the rad.

Then the trim.

3 philips screws each end and there plasric clips around the trim which just needs unclipping.

hope this helps

Don`t forget, if you have the OTG, the fastening for this is behind the number plate.

^thanks, i've removed the bumper before so i got that stage sorted.
I was just a bit confused as to how the impact rail cover was attached.
Is there a foam pad inside it?
Can i keep the foam pad and use it for the new rail cover, or is it glued in?

Yes the foam pad sits inside it. Make sure you don't go ordering the foam pad if you require the actual cover.

Chaps, any idea of the Part Number of the Screws that hold the bumper cover on at each end?
Six in total, and I'm gonna need new ones.

:help:

Right. Got the 6 Screws on order at the Dealership.
43p each or something.
Guy on the phone says it looks like I might need 6 'threaded chucks' too.
90p each - Turns out they are metal grommets that help the screws grip into the plastic.
Will keep this updated as I do it.

Neil - it's a good idea to replace the threaded chucks when you fit the screws. they are very flimsy and rust/break. Every bumper cover I've removed has had at least one or two of these chucks that weren't re-usable. Grease the screws before you fit them, then if you need to remove in the future, they should come off nice and easily.

have fun!

Thanks Neil.

I bought a complete brand new front bumper (without strip) for £10.50 on ebay from a MB dealer (RRP is over £420). If the ECP strip is good quality it might prompt me to get the new unit painted and fit a new inset strip.

I was a bit p!ssed off about that too.
I have a set of Torx drivers but tbh it's pathetic that you should have to use them on a part like that.

Likely updating an old part for newer cars full of Dealer-only bollocks that Joe Bloggs can't ever repair himself.

Need to replace both front and rear inserts on the 2.6. Some fool painted them (badly) in the past.

Exactly good old MB just trying to make our lives difficult. The screws I ordered the other day hold the kick panels in and the centre console and ashtray. All were torx opposed to the original philips ones and the ones which hold the headlights in have changed too. I think they must have just changed the lot. :-/

So, I did this today.

Took me a little while, maybe two hours as it's such a dirty job involving an awkward object.
I washed the Bumper before taking it off the car, but that still didn't quite prepare me for the level of scum and filth behind it - there's only so far a Jet-Wash will go!

Anyway, I had decided to lay out a Tarp in the lounge and do the Bumper Strip swap away from the wind and rain.
The 3 Screws (Philips head) that held on the old bumper had very rusty heads, and I feared that I might have to drill them all out.

However, after a soak in WD-40 and gentle but very firm pressure from a sharp, narrow Flat-Head Screwdriver, 5 out of 6 came out.
There was also a good deal of foul language.

Posted Image

The last one had to be drilled out, and this is a last resort imo as you risk making the mounting hole in the bumper too big, and eventually useless!
I guess if the worst came to it, you could go out and get some Washers, but I thankfully avoided that.

So when the Bumper Strip comes off - you push out the clips from the back with a screwdriver, and believe me when I say an extra pair of hands would
have been very useful - you are left with the yellowy foam Impact Pad inside, which is not attached to anything.
The odd rude word was used whilst doing this alone.

Posted Image

I put the Impact Pad to one side, cleaned the bumper shell and then got the new Bumper Strip out of its packaging to find that ECP actually include a pack of 6 Philips-Head Screws, taped to the back of the bloody Bumper...

Anyway, let's compare old (OE, top) with new (Replica, bottom):

Posted Image

New one is just as solid as the old one, a bit blacker and a bit less textured - there is still a 'grain' to it, but it's finer.

On to fitting the new strip.
Put the Impact Pad inside the Bumper Strip first, making sure it is perfectly central.
Then, take the 6 little Threaded Chucks, put some white grease inside them and fit them to the ends of the screw-sleeves on the Bumper Strip.
They are a loose fit, so pinch them on gently with long-nose pliers.
Do not make the mistake I did, which is to not do the above and lose them inside the Bumper about 5 times. Cue more swearing.

Then start mounting the Bumper Strip, starting from the centre and working outwards. Virtually all of the clips snap into place with ease, though
the last few will need much firmer pressure in order to get the screw sleeves lined up with the holes in your Bumper Shell.
I really would have liked an extra pair of hands at that point.
Once lined up, in go the Torx-Headed Screws (I bought the buggers, I'm using 'em!)

and there you have it, job done!

Remount Bumper on car, wipe off greasy finger prints and refit Number Plate :)

Well done Neil. Done that job a couple of times and suspect you may have learned some of the swear words from me! Unclipping the strip from the bumper needs three hands every time - I only have two, same as you.

See what I mean about the chucks going rusty and the need to grease the new screws?

Anyway. Job done. Just be careful not to scrape a corner now, like I did, just a month after fitting the new strip! Next time it needs paint, I'll get my bodyshop pal to do his magic trick with the back to black bumper stuff he uses.

Another tip, if you haven't already put the bumper back on - clean off, repaint & waxoyl the side bumper mounts. These have a nasty habit of corroding. Well worth doing whilst you're there.

Well I'm sure MB certainly don't make and I doubt you'd be able to find one from another supplier either tbh but I can definitely see the appeal. You might have to make one up yourself I don't know how you could go about that though...
