I've bought the bits... rad flush, Mercedes Coolant, electro water, new thermo fan switch. Gonna do it in the morning just wanted some tips for the 16v. eg...To drain do I just disconnect the hose at the bottom of the rad? Is the only place to fill it from the header tank? Best way to avoid air locks (will leave the thermo switch out when I refill) Thanx in advance.... |

If it's anything like my 2.6, there's a drain screw at the bottom of the rad, and a drain plug on the side of the engine block. Drain it from these 2 points and there's no need to remove any hoses! Leave the heaters on full, fill the system, go for a drive to get the thermostat open, then check and refill if necessary... Worked for me! And yes, fill from the header tank cap. |

Cheers Mr_S, Not looking forward to driving with the heaters on. Nice collection of bikes BTW. Always fancied owning an RD in the future. Anyone got any ideas where the plug is on the 16v engine block? ... |

Just got them from the local motor spares place. Don't know what brand of flush it is. Will it make a difference i.e. is there product I should avoid? Cheers for pointer on the engine block, will save a bit of messing about... |

Sorted thanks for the advice mr_s & studio-city
. I've never had a car with a tap on the rad, it's genius. Made the job so simple. I just love the Germans they really now how to put a car together. Probably about 85% coolant.... should be okay shouldn't it

If you dont drain the block you will never get the mixture right as it will leave a block full of old manky coolent to mix with the new stuff, thus messing up the mixture ratings. |

Used genuine Merc coolant from dealers, nice and blue and good value. I think you can run up to 100% for extreme conditions but don't quote me. I didn't drain the block but I did use Wynns flush and warmed it up properly with heaters on. Then flushed with fresh water, filled again with fresh water warmed it up and drained again to make sure it was clear. Finally filled with de ionised and coolant (mainly coolant). Will keep an eye on it and if looks crappy I'll have to do it again draining the engine as well this time... |

If you wanted to just run a hose pipe throught it to clear it out. Lewis |

Yes you could do it that way actually thinking about it Lewis. You would have to remove the thermostat(which would be a good opportunity to replace the nasty plastic housing with the upgrade metal one at the same time) and the bottom hose from the block. Then you have fresh clean water in the block. Then just top the rest up with the recommended amount of coolant. I certainly wouldn't ever recommend running 100% antifreeze mix though My owners manual states you should never use a mix higher than 55% antifreeze as the heat dissipation decreases. In other words the coolent cant soak up as much heat when you have to much antifreeze in the mix.

Yeah good thinking^^^^ Also when you take the state out you could clean the area, thats what i did and cleaned the whole system out. Lewis |

Hi, sorry for bringing up an old thread. After flushing, do you need to bleed the system to rid of any air in the system? |

Hi Chan. Yes you need to bleed the air out of the system. Once all the hoses are back on, pour in the correct amount of antifreeze/coolant for your car then top up with water to the MAX mark on the header tank. Then start the engine leaving the header tank cap off. Top up with water as and when necessary. Once the engine is up to running temp and all the air is bled out, let the car cool down and re check the header tank and top up to the MAX mark again. |

What Stu said plus, make sure you open the heater contols to maximum heat, so the coolant fills the heater matrix too.

I see, so there are no valves needed to open to let air out? |

Nope no valves. It just bleeds from the open header tank. |
