Bloody car started tapping stopped and started again,
I have just renewed all the tappits today, and its still there .
I think it might be the cam?
or as I have been told the timing chain,
I am looking at another 190e must be bloody mad,
My plan is to take the engine out of the spare 190 on the drive and get rid of the rest of the car, then I will have space to put another 190 in its place ,
if I use the new one I buy, while I do the engine up for my old car,I should finish up with 2 190s that are sound and I can then sell one,
the hardest part is convincing my wife,I think it makes sense to me,but she cant see the logic in it,
I was going to buy a Astra van, instead of a car .she shot me down in flames over that.
she wants a Fiesta or something weird like that ,
All this hassel over a tapping noise. :ph43r:

Hi Jake if they are hydraulic tappits yes it would apply the same mate,
I have change them a few times over the years,
this time it didnt work tho , the cam doesnt look to clever, also a bit of slap in the timing chain,
So I might as well put this newer engine in ,the plan is to strip it down regrind the valves, and see what happens,
The old engine runs fine, just cant cope with the tap noise frank

Ive got a bloody horrible top end tip tap. I was hoping so much it was the lifters/tappits but after listen to your problems im thinking more and more its somthing less curable. Couldnt live with spening hours thinking im fixing it and starting it up to sound the same. I guess only time will tell.

I think im going to sell up and buy a horse for work if i cant fix my tapping.

HI Kenny most of the time it is the hydraulic tappets,£59 fron ecp.
I would take the rocker cover off, have a feel of the cam chain for any undue play, and have a good look at the cam for signs of wear,if they look okay,
then put a set of tappets in.
I know how annoying that tap is believe me :(

Just an odd addition to the discussion: I get a periodic tappit chatter whenever I've filled the oil level up to the max line on the dip stick on my old runner (1992 190E 2.0 petrol Motor:102.962 = 216,000 miles). It will go through cycles of progressively louder chattering and then stop abruptly before coming back a little while later - more so above 1500 rpm. After a few hundred miles it all vanishes, which coincides with the oil level falling back to around the half-way mark. I used to associate this with having once used the wrong spec oil, a 5W40 instead of 10W40, but now that's been corrected it appears it's just the oil level (unless by working the new oil and burning some of it off I am inadvertently modifying the remaining oil towards a spec closer to what the engine prefers?). Wierd!

On some of the older push rod North American engines I have solved a noisy hydraulic lifter noise by adding oil additives such as Rislone and Bardahl. These would only work if a lifter was noisy because it was dirty and stuck since these products are basically solvents. It might be worth a try if the engine noise is indeed a stuck lifter.

Cheers Hu99u - I'll let you know!
Thanks Norseman - I have regularly used an engine flush agent before each oil service (annually since about 2010), so I would have hoped that this was doing the business as far as freeing up any clogged arteries. But maybe not!
Just seems odd that the tapping only occurs when the oil level is at the max mark.
