Hi, just bought my first mercedes 1990 190E 2 litre petrol in really great condition (only 46000 on clock) . Will post some picture later. Was driving in slow traffic in Cardiff for the first time and noticed the temperature gauge continually rising until just nudging the red. Luckily friend remembered a trick to turn on heaters/air blowers on full to reduce engine heat which did the trick and gauge returned to around halfway mark. The oil guage is currently fluctuating between full (3) and the (2)

Is there somewhere on the site with advice regarding this particular issue or something I should check...if necessary with a garage (does anyone know a good one in Cardiff?) Thanks

Hi mate and welcome.
With regard to overheating one of the first things to do is to check to see if the fan is cutting in . If you look through the old posts you should find it . I think you need to cross two of the terminals with a bit of wire If I remember correctly, but its all here on the forum somewhere.

It's pretty normal for the temp to run over 80 if your sitting in traffic or only crawling along in 1st/2nd. Aslong as it drops back down to 80 once your driving along your okay. You'll find loads of 190 owners have the same thing.

Thanks for the replies guys. Will have a look at the fan issue. Temperature rises to top of gauge even if just idling parked on side of the road. Will see how it goes tomorrow. Guess I'll be using the blowers on full heat for a while :-)

I was once told that if your car is overheating then what you can do for a short journey is to take the radiator cap off. That way it does not get up to full pressure or anywhere near as hot as it would with it on.
Can anyone confirm that this is true ? Wouldnt want to suggest this if its not.

wont been funny but its not advisable to do that the rad top is spring loaded so if it gets to much pressure it opens up

Get the thermostat checked out asap.
The temp shouldn't ever get near the red, it should barely pass 100 (the mark above 80)
and the fan should then kick in, audibly.
The last thing you want to do is keep driving it in this condition, you will warp the head.

MadMike, you are living up to your username  crazy man!
