Hello , I have just bought an original 190e 1991 and there are 2 problems , firstly i had an intermittent starter motor which is currently being replaced and the other problem is that at times the revs stay very high - 2000rpm in drive and 3000rpm in neutral , if i push the accellorater then it usually goes back to normal with a some banging type noise it can happen when cold or warm - has anyone any ideas what this may be? |

When its running and overevving try putting your toe under the pedal and pulling it up to see if it will slow it down that way,as before it might just be sticking. |

Two things, 1,are you saying that the revs go down if you "blip" the throttle a few times, 2, where does the noise seem to come from ? If it does turn out to be the cable then just put on a new cable. Not too costly to do. |

Is the noise a popping /backfire sort of noise or is it like something perhaps metal hitting something else ? |

it is not really like backfireing/popping but more like thudding (possibly metal hitting something) |

yes that is when the over revving happens and i put it into netral and blip the accelerator to get the revs down ... the noise only happens when the revs are going when in netral from 3000 to normal? |

I had a similar problem ( only the overevving ) some years ago on a Sierra, Long story, but it turned out to be the injection system. There is a website which gives information about our system with lists of common problems a their causes. I will have a look for it, you might get a few ideas from that. |

Just had another thought.Could this be a gearbox fault ? The car is auto isnt it ? Does it slip/overrev when you try to accelerate ? |

I have the same problem too, but only the overevving. I got the car(1992 1.8 auto) just over a month ago and last week I spoke to a mechanic who told me he knew what the problem is. I'm going to take it in 2 weeks time so he can have a look. I will post his findings. |
