Cheers for the welcome. I'm glad to be driving a RWD car again after so long (last RWD I had was a 1988 Granada 2.4 Ghia, before that a 1986 Ford Sierra Sapphire). After the Rover 827 it's a bit different to drive, but I'm getting used to it. I'll be looking for a way to get more power from the 2.0 SOHC lump that currently inhabits the engine bay in the future, so I expect derision for that. :)

I'm poor (Honest!!), so what can be done with a minimum of outlay and engineering?

Not a giant amount I'm afraid. :(
To really squeeze the power out you're looking at the thousands. You can make a few little adjustments for better throttle response, but no real gains. First things would be air filter, free flowing exhaust and a good tune up for the injection system.

So the usual then..... better breathing and sparks. :)

Yes - I don't know the 2-litre engine well, but if it's like other Mercs I've owned, then the chances are there is far too much metal in the cylinder head.

Given that you can buy a useable head for pennies (relatively) then it's worth carving a few lumps off it, to open out the ports each side, for example, and enlarge the valves. If you do it over time you won't notice the pain and you can pace yourself.

These engines can easily do half a million miles, so if you are prepared to sacrifice some of that and are prepared to be the clerk of works, you can do it piecemeal and then, in one go, swap the head.

I did this with an MG once and although the results were disappointing it was a vg learning curve.

I had an MGC and bought a cylinder head from a scrapped Austin 3-litre (same casting). I carved away at it in the evenings, supervised by an old guy who really knew his stuff, and gradually built it up.

When I plonked it on, I knew I had the fastest MGC on the planet, but unhappily, that was not saying much.

I reckon you could assemble the parts for a 'head job' really q. cheaply; using either OE stuff or (selectively) GSF or Euro car parts, you might get away with a few hundred quid. It will take time, and you will (we all do) make mistakes, but at the end of it yr car will have some edge to it and - best of all - you will know these engines in your sleep!

Best of luck!
