I have bought new dampers for my 3.0 and 2.0d as they both rattle like hell, I thought the 2.0d would come out without removing the rad and fan but it seems not, is there an easy way that I am missing ? I am pretty sure the lack of room means the 3.0 will have to have the rad and fan removed but the 2.0d is so close, its just the bolt won't quite squeeze out from behind the pulley. I know I am just being lazy really but there are so many other jobs to do any shortcuts would be a real help. |

I did mine last week on a 2.0, not sure if the procedure will be the same though, the hex bolt in question rounded itself at the sight of a hex socket and I had to drill it out. I undid all the rad clips, undid top and bottom hoses and shifted the rad to the left. this left me enough room to pop the bolt cover off the drivebelt tensioner pulley remove it completely letting the belt hang loose. There was just enough room to slip a long extension and bit between the fan blades to get at the shock bolt although as I said I had to resort to a drill. Went to the local scrappy for another bolt but the three 190's they had rounded out too but frank133 managed to sort out a bolt and saved my ass. Well worth the effort as mine had been making 'orrible' noises since I got it and is great now. |

what is this damper you talk of? what does it do and what noise does it make when knackered?> I ask as my 2ltr has started making a funny nopise from somewhere in teh engine bay just as i pull away each time, sounds like its coming from the pulleys/tensioner kinda area |

Its right at the front of the engine and it damps the belt tensioner (I think anyway). What often happens is the rubbers at one or both ends wears and you get a rattle noise, its incredibly hard to pinpoint and often sounds like its the rockers. You can diagnose by very carefully popping your in behind the fan and pushing the shock hard to one side to take up the slack, I thought my engine was dying until I was shown all that noise was coming from one tiny rubber. Unfortunately you have to buy the whole shock as a unit (about £22), and it seems its a bit awkward to fit. Annoying when its only the rubber thats gone The m103 version looks like a total nightmare, there is very little room. |

whole shock as a unit (about £22), Jon Panzer paid £46 for his,I was going to ask him for his old one ,if its only the bush that goes,I think mine is a bit knocky cant you replace the bush? my knock is only first thing when you start it ,dosnt increase with engine speed,so I dont think its engine related, it does sound like a black cab ,for a minuet or two

Its the correct kind of sound but I would expect it to either make it all the time or drift in and out. My m103 one was £22 and the diesel was £21 from eurocarparts. The bushes are pressed really tight into the shock, I tried to remove them but I suspect I would damage them if I really tried. I will have a better look tomorrow. |

I hope it is that damper, its on this sportline I bought, and I heard it when I bought the car,it only lasts for a few seconds, and dosnt seam to bad if its in n, unfortunately this car has air con so the radiators are going to be in the way . the engine runs perfect all day I might let it develop and see what happens cheers frank |

HEHEHE, how that for a quick turnaround !!! Its not hard to push the bushes out. Knock the metal inner out and then pull the rubber out. Easy Getting them in may be a bit harder. the number on the rubbers are destex 202 303 030 |

Dave_irl put me on to this thread from mine, as this sounds like exactly the same issue that I've had on my 190e. So thanks to Kentronix for bringing it up, and thanks to everyone else too for their advice. I'm going to try "carefully popping your hand in behind the fan and pushing the shock hard to one side to take up the slack" to see if this is the fault with my 190e? If this is a common thing in the life of a 190e couldn't someone pin this thread? |

It seems common to me, 3 of the 4 190s I have worked on have all had the problem. |

My 2ltr manual dosnt have one,Panzer and I had a look,I think they must just be on the auto,If I can get my hand behind this massive radiator on the sportline I will have a feel for it,its auto and knocking a bit. |
