Just a quick "Hi" as a newbie...

I have to confess that a 190e wasn't my immediate choice, but such is the immediate need for a car and the joys of the "Buy It Now" section of ebay i'm now the owner of a '91 190e 1.8 manual.

Not without its problems (but it was only £400!), but i'm actually pleasantly surprised by it - dare i compare it favourably to our last German steed (a 1986 BMW 525e - awaits flaming!) in its solid nature. Very good roadholding and that nice "solid" feel.

The diff is noisy as all hell (by digging around on here, its a common problem), the wheels need balancing badly and had to put an override switch on the fan clutch, but so far so good. The small misfire at idle is annoying as well...

It looks like it might be a Sportline, although no badges to say so (lower bodykit, rear spoiler and lower than standard), so not sure!

It's not a ball of fire (what did I expect from a 1.8?), but seems to hold its own on motorways - as long as I don't try to accelerate in 5th below 60mph!

It looks like it may well be a keeper - in which case its looking like I might convert it to LPG as I'm not a fan of KE-Jetronic (much more of an EFi man).

I guess I'll be lurking around the Tech forums most of the time - alas mechanical competence is much more my things than shiny paint and big wheels!

Welcome to the site, i'm sure you'll feel at home :)

Get some pics up of the car in the relevant section. You can easily check whether its a sportline by taking the VIN from under the bonnet and using the russian VIN decoder (its at the top of one of the tech sections). Price sounds pretty good and i'm sure that once you have those niggles fixed you wont be letting it go for a long time!

The VIN Decoder is Here

Welcome to the forun. To check if your car is a Sportline go to General Technical Information and you will see the link to the VIN checker website. If yours is a sportline it shoul say Sports Chassis on the list of options fitted to your car.

Let us know what you find as they are quite rare.

oops, beat me to it !

No "Sports Chassis" entry in the VIN decoder, although there's no desription by Option 362..?

Still, I like it, Sportline or not!

Will get a half decent pic up soon...

I was trying to ascertain if the bits on there were just options, or even standard (it has the lower body kit as i've seen on Sportlines (plus a boot spoiler), and is lower than a friends 2.6 If it isn't, no matter!

On my car Sports Chassis is listed as option no.650. Option no. 362 is also blank on mine.

Once you get some pics up the guys will be able to tell you more as to what you have on the car.

Hi and welcome. I got my 1992 190e 1.8 auto about 2 months ago for £425. The only thing needing sorting was a slightly blowing mid and backbox which cost me £80 parts and got it fitted free by a mate. Got the MOT last week with only one caution, front number plate broken of which I had a new set done which only needed swapping over. This car replaced my lovely '97 audi A4 1.8se avant after 3 years ownership and although the audi was marginally faster and has a much nicer interior the overall comfort is on par and on the motorway there is virtually no difference accept of cause the audi cost me £3500 in 2004. These are really nice cars for what you pay for.

Welcome fella.
Joyous cars they are, I love my 1.8 Auto to bits...
1986 525e = very cool, not a hint of flaming from me!

Best of luck with it, hope it makes you smile :)

Not sure how the BMW would go down, being MB's arch rivals, etc!

I just hope that it does me as well as the Bimmer did - seing as both cars (the E28 and the W201) are regarded in both camps as the last "proper" one they made - i.e. engineering came before cost. The 190E has less rust on it (none) than the BM when I bought it - and both were the same age on purchase. Strangely, both have the same colour scheme in and out, plus both have spoilers and a mild bodykit (I now think mine is just the "16V" one looking at other pics)...I see a pattern emerging here!

BM had a whining gearbox, MB has a whining diff..
Both have infinitely adjustable seats with armrests..
Both do 34mpg..

This is getting too spooky for my liking...someone please tell me something the 2 don't have in common (apart from engine size and number of cylinders)!

Welcome to the site,
I had a 318i touring before the Merc 190e and I loved it,
shame a transit f#@ked it.

Welcome!

A good old trusty 1.8 manual. First 190 and car I ever had. Still do!

They can still put a smile on your face even with all 80kw's of tyre shredding power

Definitely worth keeping.

Enjoy the site B)

Many Thanks...

It does seem that the 1.8 may be the lowest powered, but if nothing else is a sign of things to come! I must admit to changing the ignition plug over from N to S today - and now it actually feels like all 80kW...

With hindsight and a bit more research i might have held out for a 2.0 Auto, but we'll see how things go with the 1.8 for now...

Tbh now you've bought a 1.8, the 2.0 would be a barely-noticeable step up.
2.6 or Cossie next :P

I know someone with a 2.6 Auto he's had from new which he doesn't use now.... dare i suffer the drop in mpg (given its a daily driver)..? Getting about 33mpg from the 1.8 at the moment, but expect that to drop a little when its goes onto LPG.
