Just wanted to say hi and ask if anyone knows where I can order a new fuel pump for my 1991 190E 2.0 . I have been having a problem with my car where it will start then dies. Every time the AA get out to me it works again!! Its so annoying. This time however the fuel pump kept pressurizing on and off before I turned the engine over, the engine would start then cut out as the pump stopped running. My fuel pump is noisy and whines quite a bit. Any thoughts on where to get the fuel pump from I am in East Sussex. Also do you know of any good mercedes mechanics down in Sussex.. Great site people and a pleasure to meet you :)

Hello and Welcome B)

You can get a second hand fuel pump, then clean it out by putting it in clean fuel and running the motor on 12 volt to flush it through of old petrol and attach it to the fuel pump asssembly under the car.

As Colin suggested mercman is a good place to start.

Check the fuel pump relay first, it's a more likely candidate for the problem you describe and easier to get to.

Hi Roadwolf69,

Thanks for the advice I did check the fuel pump relay and swapped it out for one from a scrap merchants. Though it could still be faulty I guess. I think when the problem comes back I will need to bridge the FPR and then check if the fuel pump runs. The strange thing is that this time when the problem occurred the fuel pump was re-pressurizing a large amount of times before I started the engine. I have never heard it do this before, and as the engine was running it seemed starved of fuel the idle was bad and the oil pressure never reached 3 which it usually does it just stayed around 2. I felt relieved that finally the problem was exposed but oh that would be to easy. It did this three times for the AA man then after I moved the car for him to inspect electrics running to the pump etc.. It worked like there was never a problem at all. Talk about annoying!! Thanks all for suggestions etc.. keep em coming :)

rainemac - the guy is Terry Murden, 71 Western Road, Haywards Heath. 01444 443 603. The car went there for 8 or so years and the po said he was the best they'd ever used. Hope its of help.

Thanks RM Merc!! I have handed the car over to Terry who has found a fault with the Ignition Control Module. Apparently it was sending out strange readings when connected to his diagnostic equipment, the channel which goes to the fuel pump was faulty hence my intermittent issue when stalling etc. New one on the way then back on the road.
Thanks again everyone.

Might be worth checking the crank signal sensor on the front of the engine. When the engine is running this signals to the fuel pump relay to keep running. However when starting it's ignored; the pump runs always when starting. Would explain the pump not running once the engine starts as that's the signal required to keep pump running (safety thing in case u crash).

Hey All,

Hope your all having a great weekend. I got my new Ignition Control Unit and all seems fine now. Could anyone of you explain how the Ignition Control Unit ( module ) can control the fuel pumps power and how is this linked ? . My problem was with the fuel pump dying out and the car cutting out. Just curious as to how this works.
Thanks..R
