Changing the injectors is a very easy task tbh.

Got my new ones through the post this morning;

Posted Image

Look nice and shiney

Posted Image

Their is one bolt per pair of injectors holding them in, normally they are in tight and with rounded allen key holes so mull grips are needed

Posted Image

With the bolt and tubular piece of ali removed lift the 2 plates up so you can get a 12mm spaner on the injector. You can remove the top falk plate and undo the olive/nut with a 14mm spanner.

Posted Image

The injectors themselves will just slip out then you put them in hot soapy ater so you can remove the rubber housing

Posted Image

you then remove the casings from the intake manifold. They just slip out.

Posted Image
Posted Image

You then at the same time remove the rubber piping and give everything a clean and soften the o-rings

Posted Image

you will be left with a hole in the inlet manifold like this;

Posted Image

Next step is to put the rubbers onto the new injectors, then put them into the housing and reasemble.

You can clean/polish/paint the plates if you want to give it a new look if you so wish

This is the finished product;

Hope it all makes sence :)

Very useful, Nick; how much do you tighten them in? Also, how long do we expect injectors to last?

60-70,000 miles they need changing.

cost is aroound £70 delivered.

You only need to nip them tight and not over do it. Most of it is just pop on rubbers that press fit into place.

So easy B)

Do you know if it is a similar process with the M103 engine?

Good guide by the way!

Its a bit different on the 2.6 M103 engine.
Here's a mini guide.

The first thing to do is remove the air box. You will then see the fuel distributor and the pipes that go to the injectors.

The first thing that is different is that each injector is held in by its own separate bracket.
Posted Image

Id recommend you undo the olive nut (14mm spanner needed for this)before you undo the bracket(5mm Allen bolt) otherwise the fuel pipe and olive nut just twist.

The first three injectors are a pain to get to and you definitely need to remove air box support bracket to get to the first injector.
Posted Image

The next two are the most tricky ones to get to. I found that to get the injector out of the second one i had to remove the fuel pipe completely from the fuel distributor. The others can simply be moved out of the way.
Posted Image

The next one along was a right royal pain to get the Allen key on and even harder to get any leverage. So i used a tried and tested method of slipping a ring spanner over the end of the Allen key :D
Posted Image

Once you undo the olive nuts move/bend the pipes out of the way and undo the Allen bolt, the injectors will just pull out in one unit with the fixing brackets still attached.
Posted Image

The bracket just pulls off. The rubber seals are a bit more difficult to remove and may get damaged in the process. So i recommend getting new seals before you do the job.

As you can see there are no plastic tubes or pipes to clean like on the 16v models. The injectors slot directly into the intake manifold.

Refitting is basically the reverse although i found it easier on some to not fit the bracket until i had slotted the new injector in place.

Just a few pointers and tips there which i hope help B)

I got curious about changing injectors in my winter car 2.3.
The car have worked quite good, maybe a little slow compared to the 2.5-16....

So i got hold of 4 very little used injectors from Jesper aka Racing.
Mounted them and took the car for a spin B)

HOLY CRAP! I have found wear my 30 missing pony's wear hiding!
The car revs-up faster, it pulls like it never have before! its just :driver: to drive!

Yes, replacing them realy does make a difference. Mine had a flat spot between 2000 and 2900rpm. It would then seem to hit a power band and take off!! Now its just smooth acceleration with no flat spots at all B)

Its such a cheap and easy fix that realy should be done if you haven't already :driver:

Has Nobody Ever heard of Redex? This sh!t does actuallyy work, I have tried it on a couple of fuel injected engines, and the difference afterwards is alot better, it is alot cheaper option than buying new injectors.

I have a 2 litre 190e, and wouldn't even know where the injectors were on my car, so Redex is the best option for me, as it cant actually harm the car.

Agreed but injectors do wear and as far as I'm aware Redex will not replace worn metal.

I use STP Injector Cleaner every 5 or 6 tankfuls and it does make a tangible difference, but I know for sure that my injectors are certainly not 'as new'.

as an alternative to purchasing new injectors, you can also remove the existing injectors, and clean them in an ultrasonic solution. i do this for both gas and diesel merceds injectors. it makes a bigger difference on diesel injectors, but it can also be done on the gas injectors since they cannot be disassembled to be rebuilt

Sev,
May I ask what an 'ultrasonic solution' is? I have read that someone has cleaned their injectors by soaking them in vinegar overnight (then wash them thoroughly in fresh water and dry them).
Any comments on this method gents, good or bad, all are welcome,

Richard

mechanical injectors don't really respond to most cleaning methods like EFI and need to be replaced.

They are common to a huge number of cars, Jeremy, including Ferrari. I'm not suggesting you go there, but Nick and I bought them of the same bloke who was, as I recall, near Southampton (or Bournemouth, or somewhere like that).

Any details on this, like part numbers etc for my '88 2.5 16V.

And , if possible, the address of the chappie where you got them from.

I'm going down to the south coast next week, and I could pick them up after ordering them.

Thanks.

The Mercedes part number for your injectors is: A 000 078 56 23

Or BOSCH part number: 0437502047

I have just looked up the procedure in my Haynes manual for removing the injectors (on the 2.0), Surely it can't be that simple!

It truely is. I did mine a few weeks ago and apart from having to ease past some pipe work to get at the back two it was a doddle. I'd bought some new seals as well so it was a straight swap, the ones I'd removed looked as if they had been on the car for a longtime, really tarnished and gungy. Should be good for several years now!

Its as simple as me and cossie con show in our posts!!

And as for taking them out and getting them sonically cleaned, don't bother. The brass mechanical ones in our cars simply wear out so replacement is the best option for high mileage cars.

But i do agree with Neil that the injector cleaner is a good thing to use once in a while. Not only does it help keep the injectors clean but it also cleans out the entire fuel system and helps to keep it in tip top condition.

Replacing the injectors was the best thing i have ever done to my 2.6. It instantly got rid of a few flat spots i had and gave the car much more power and torque. Well worth it in my opinion B)

Has anyone actually measured the performance to see if they make a difference?

I am very tempted, but I would rather not shell out £80 to find it doesn't really make a difference.

I'm only really here for the Kitchens

I have just done this job on my m103 (same as a 2.6). Pretty easy job to be honest, took about 40 minutes. Stwats description was perfect for me, I used an allen in a socket rather than a bent allen bar. It means with an extension I just about got them all off without removing the pipes from the fuel distributor.

If you are reusing the seals (like I did) you will want to remove them without damaging them. This is my method.

2 mole wrenches (vice grips), the larger one is clamped down tight. The smaller one is not tight at all, its just to push on the seal, its not actually gripping anything.
Posted Image

Some were relatively easy, and pulled off with a bit of force.
Posted Image

Some involved a foot. The foot is not applying pressure, its just there to hold the wrench in place, its the pulling with my hands doing the work. This is important otherwise you will kill the seal when it comes out and you crush it with your foot :) Any foot will do, I chose to go with my left foot as I couldnt find my right one at the time.

You could use a vice or something if you have one.
Posted Image

And slip the seal back on the new one. They are rubber seals and not under a huge amount of pressure, if they are in good condition I see no reason why you cant re-use them. They are only 75p each but I didnt want to wait for them to arrive.
Posted Image

I noticed a smoother idle and definate power increase at the top end, above 5000rpm. Mid range may have been sharper but if so it was quite subtle. Above 5k it was obvious.
