Just Bought 190e

Just saying hello and looking for advice and tips! I bought a 1985 190E yesterday- it was rebuilt about 10 years ago with parts from a K-reg 190. I paid £450 and, as I expected for that money, it's a bit rough round the edges but fundamentally a good car as I can tell at the moment.
I have a few questions if someone wouldn't mind answering them for me-
1. Manual gearbox stick is pretty sloppy but everything engages fine- is this common?
2. Side bottoms of car covered in plastic trim- is this easy to remove and put back- am i to expect corrosion horrors or do the sills etc usually last ok? Are the plastic 'skirts' rust traps?
3. I need a jack and a driver's door mirror - where's best on the 'net for cheap parts for the 190?
4. alloys are pretty grim- don't want to fork out too much at the moment so planned to just take the rest of the lacquer off and spray paint for now- is there appropriate paint available?
5. Any tips and anything i should look out for as a 190e newbie?
Cheers.
James

The Godfather

welcome and you have come to the right place for all your info B)

gears sticks are a bit poor compared to some cars <_<

if you want to inspect the lower section just remove the sill covers, rather easy 8mm bolts into the floor.

door panels can come off but to be honest the doors are normally solid on these cars.

i have a jack you can have for a couple of quid to cover postage or flea bay has loads of parts for these cars as do other members.

alloys are typicall to loose there luster but they are old now, normal rattle cans will freshen them up.

as for tip the list is endless and i have to go now

just check under the car at the jacking points and around the back window seal at the bottom and the inner wings for rot :o

Steve.

I'm only really here for the Kitchens

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Sloppy gearstick isnt a particularly common issue I dont think but it sound like gearshift linkage bushes. Pretty cheap if you can do it yourself, I don't think its particularly hard.

Its pot luck with the plastic trim, they arent known for hiding horrors (like chrome arch trim) but its always possible. Not sure how to remove, someone will know.

If your after second hand ebay is probably the cheapest. Or of course ask in here, we have a wanted section.

There are a few threads on refurbing alloys, over in the wheel/tyres section.

Your best leaving the door cladding in place, because the clips usually break and are quite expensive for bits of plastic, just feel under the bottom edge of the door for rust.

As Steve says, rattle cans will sort out your wheels. Just did mine with nothing but wet and dry and cans.
