Hi everyone, dont have a 190 myself
,... well just not yet
i drive a 91 vw polo 1.0, but have lost interest and found much love for the 190!apart from the welcome id like to ask a few questions, before i do. im a hnd motorsport engineering student and have much experience working on/around cars in all areas so nothings to hard for me to have a try at,..right anyway ive found a 92 plate 190d, its the 2.5L so ive been told, no tax and unsure of mot/service history as of yet. its in red and seems pretty much std with the old tape deck in place also. im looking to buy (for £400 gnna try for 350) and would like to know what to look out for, any common problems or anything serious! today i started it up. it was cold and shook the whole car but after a few seconds idle fine an had no excessive smoke from exhaust, 3 of the 4 electric windows didnt work(doesnt bother me thats jus cosmetic tbh) there was some smoke coming from around the exhaust manifold,. i assume just damp as it had been raining hard all day, the bonnet pnuematic ram is dead and there was a tapping rattle from the middle underside of the car, i presume just a loose exhaust. its the first ive seen one up close but i will admit im in love haha :D,. so is there anything i need to be worried about?! or is it all plain sailing? oh and it has 165k on the clock.an all electrics worked didnt try the sunroof though as it was raining. Sorry for the long post! i dont want to go in for a sale blind Phill

Hello and Welcome
165k is nothing for one of these 5cyl diesel engines good upto 300k+ if looked after... As for the windows it may well be water damage to the motor, you can take them apart and clean them up or replace them, also the wires sometimes break between the door and the post... 92, so its near one of the last (production ended in 1993) so should be a rather solid example... Heres alittle guide on what to look out for: ![]() ![]() Lewis |

hi there chap and welcome for £400 if its got no mot i'd walk away look at all four jacking points under the car as they like to rust there. inner wings, under the water bottle and washer bottle (easy to remove to check just undo a big plastic bolt by hand to lift the washer bottle) and around the seal at the bottom of the rear window. check boot under the spare as it rots there if the back window or seals have been leaking. front wings rust and around the back number plate area/ back lights /number plate lights and boot seal area. as for diesel don't expect ligtning power but it keeps the running costs down and insurance low. Steve. |

hi and welcome mate as Steve says at £400 it should have some MOT. I'd push the garage to get one rather than knocking £50 off it, at least you'll know its structually sound. |

merc190- not sure if it has mot or not going to have a look over the net about that! but thanks anyway as for the bodywork. i used to have a mk3 fiesta so a few holes dont bother me too much, also ive got a few mates who can weld if need be
considering im from liverpool but at uni in swansea i could do with a derv anyway,.. this last year my lil polo has clocked 13,000miles since febuary insurance isnt a problem and im not after anything lightning quick but i do have a new k03 turbo, nitrous kit and a megasquirt ecu on order if need be ![]() Jenson- hey thanks mate, its not a garage unfortunately,i will however be heading back next weekend to have a look and enquire more about the mot and service history |

all ill say is that NOTHING is impossible mate! some custom fabrication i guess would be needed and such but would make for some right fun, it was all going on my 1.0 polo which would kick the power from the 45hp to around 150hp, before nitrous. thanks for the welcome anyway |

i apologise didnt clearly explain myself(had a bad week due to family issues) i dont know if it has mot or not, i know it is currenty sorn(with thanks to the internet haha :D) its located in a car sales place but they got loads of cars from a couple hunderd to 1k, this is just in the midde of a few cars. i spotted it in one of the freebie magazines u get in asda while in swansea so had a look it said 499 but when i asked earlier they wanted 400 for it. ive got some pics u cnt see much but ill post them up. im really in love with it though haha. they told me they get sent cars to sell, either old trade ins or jus ppl have put them there to get rid of,.. so im gonna ask them about the service next week and try contact the old owner also. |
