I was looking to buy a used car, something that was comfortable, fun to drive and reliable. I had a budget of around £500 to £600. So I searched the papers and the internet to see what I could find. After looking at a plethora of Mondeos, Vectras and the odd Robin Reliant three wheeler, an ad for a 1981 Mercedes Benz 190 caught my eye. Boasting 4 doors, manual 5 speed gearbox, wood effect trim, full service history and 6 months tax and ticket (has a slight dent in the O/S rear panel). Because of my Job I have driven quite a few Mercedes but I have never owned one so I gave the dealer a call. I was half expecting to talk to a 22 year old lad with enthusiasm bursting from every orifice and promising me “this car WILL fly you to the moon”. I was pleasantly surprised to talk to a level -headed man who chatted with me about the car without any hint of pushiness. I have always said to people “don’t go and look to buy a car in the rain” but as I arrived at the dealers the heavens opened, I was not impressed. I met Richard, the dealer, and he showed me around the Mercedes and, to my surprise, I could not find very many faults with the car. Then I turned the key, the Mercedes burst into life with a silky smooth raw even though it was cold and, as I waited for the engine to warm up, I resisted the urge to put my hands in my pockets, hunch my shoulders and kick the tire. The test drive showed me that the Mercedes had been very well looked after and loved. It had been bought from a main dealer and had always gone back there to have anything done. The last service was about 4 months ago and the only faults where a dent in the driver’s side rear quarter panel, slightly dulled paint on the bonnet and one or two little rust spots in the usual places. So I bought a Mercedes 190 for far less than my budget, I had enough to pay my insurance in full and take my wife out for a night on the town. I’d say that a pritty good day John |
