Hi Guys and Girls,

This is my first post on here. Been looking on here for some time and enjoyed it very much.

Been after a 190 for a while but only just bought my first!

I love the car already. With a bit of time (and money) I know I can get this car looking great. I cant wait to start (if it ever stops raining) but have a few questions if anyone does not mind helping.

Its a 1993 190E 2.0 LE Auto in Dark red/maroon (120,000 miles). Everything works great including the Air Con. The body is almost spotless. However:-

1. Loud squeeks comming from outside the car whenever I turn left. Could it be break related?

2. The accelerator pedal seems to have very little resistance and sometimes feels like it has a mind of its own! On occasion when stopping, the engine revs quickly and continues to do so unless I blip the throttle. At which point it recovers to its natural idle. It also picks up speed without putting any extra pressure on the pedal.

3. The car is reluctant to start from cold. It turns over between 10 and fifteen times before firing. Once warm its fine.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Gary

PS. If its dry I will take some pics and post them on Saturday.

I love the le's the burr walnut trim really does it for me.
the wife had one in azzuro blue but sold it,she really regrets it.
As for your probs............
The squeak could be a balljoint, does it squeak when bounced?
The soft pedal and sticking throttle sounds like the return spring has snapped or come off.
The bad starting could be temp sender, over voltage relay, air leaks, cold start injector, idle valve or could be related to the return spring.
I would check the return spring repair that and see how it goes.

Many thanks for your assistance.

I also love the interior of the car. It just has class which is sadly lacking in most modern cars. I do have one very small cigarette burn on the drivers door card (armrest). Does anybody have any tips on masking it?

Coming to my original questions:

1. The squeek only happens when the car is moving. Bouncing the car does not create any strange noise. It does seem to get worse when breaking!

2. I will take a look at the spring. I assume this is situated behind the pedal itself?

I will be very happy if it only needs a spring.

Thanks again for your help

Gary

Hi

I am a Newbie and no bugger all. However I had a starting problem with mine when I bought it a couple of weeks ago. I had a few hoses changed and the Carb cleaned out and it started a lot better. Then I read the 1990 manual and it said when starting from cold depress the accelerator before starting the key. Het Presto it starts every time and does not miss a heart beat!

Hi mate & welcome!

the loose accel. pedal and random idling/revving is 99% likely a snapped throttle return spring as UKMT says. Its at the engine end.
Have a look at where the throttle linkage, there should be one spring there, but also feel around underneath, behind the linkage, there should be a second spring there, it may have snapped and just be dangling there, you'll soon find it :)

Thanks to you all for being such a great help. I am sure I will get to know the car in time but it gives me so much more confidence to know there are people here happy to provide such good & honest advice.

I am going to get under that bonnet tomorrow and take a look at the return spring. If it is not present are they easy to get hold of?

Cant wait to get this fixed as it spoils the experience somewhat.

I have been looking through ebay to find a slider switch plastic button for the Air Con control. Mine is missing and would like to replace it. Any ideas where I can source one?

A small picture of my pride & Joy below.

I have not seen many other LE's on here, any ideas how many were made?

Thanks so much.

You'll get a return spring from the dealer pretty cheap, the cold starting can sometimes be helped by putting some fuel system cleaner in your tank and running it through the system, I use slick50, get if from halfords or motor world, £14.99. It worked for me seolio and it's a cheaper option than fitting expensive new parts only to find they haven't cured the problem.

hey guys...what is LE?

They were the last of the line run out models filled with goodies and limited paint colours. Intended to help sell off all the 190's left before the W202 C class was launched B)

hey guys...what is LE?

The last run of M102-8's were available in LE form, usually had most of the nice electric extra options, and available in some pretty nice colours too.

Thanks again everyone for your help. I checked the return spring and found it to be fine. However it does feel much softer than I was expecting. The whole assembly was quite stiff and a bit of WD40 has made it free but the pedal is still 'sticky'. I will get a new spring and see how that goes.

Moving on to the bad starting I will pick up some fuel system cleaner and give it a go. Thanks for the suggestion mb190e.

No problem Gary, hope it works and saves you some money.
You will probably have to run a tank of fuel through before you notice the difference!
