hi all, i'm a new member, having just aquired a 1988 190e in wonderfully average condition, with only one (odd) problem, when it rains, which right now seems to be all day, every day, the wheel wells in the boot collect large amounts of water, especially the nearside one, I cant locate the drain holes, (there must be some) any ideas? |

Have alook through this buying guide it talks about why water collects the boot etc.. Heres a buying guide: Mercedes-Benz W201 buyers guide There are drainage holes, three in total, one in each well and one in the spare wheel well, common that these become blocked and hold water in this area in turn allowing the area to rust... This is caused by a number of issues, these being the sunroof drainage pipes that connect to the sunroof and exit at each corner of the pillers, sometime these disconnect causing water to leak down in the wells and collect there, i suggest removing a corner of the headlining and inspcting these areas. The rear windscreen does not have to come for this, its just a case of removing the liner in that section. Remove the arch liners to get a good look at the well, these just pull out, you will then see the drainage plug/bung, clean these and the water will drain away, also check your spare wheel area... Lewis EDIT: oh, Hello and Welcome

Hi mate. Remove the inner boot liners, as described here You should find a removable rubber plug in each side. It's probably blocked. Take it out, clean it and replace it. ![]() You might have a little rust in there, don't worry it can be sorted. The other things to do are to check the seal around your rear window (do this with the boot open) and to check along the trailing edge of the bootlid for a tiny rubber bung. If it's still there, remove it and this should help stop water building up in the bootlid spars. Also, remove the C-pillar exterior vents (held in by a screw in each rear door-shut, then popped into a clip at the rear-window end) and inspect that area for corrosion or damage. Good luck fella, hope you get it sorted!

thanx all, for your advice, peeled back the boot trim, shovelled 19 autumns worth of leaves, dead squirrels and a "frankie he says relax" t-shirt out into the daylight then i prodded and poked until i could feel something wet on my timberlands, and lo and behold, no rust, either side! I was almost expecting to see the axle, but all i could see was boot floor, Deep joy. After paking it in the sun, well, out of the rain, for a couple of hours i could finally drive, and, see out of the rear window, now, if only i could see forwards as well............. |
