If you have two colours on your car e.g. Black and Gold, you can spray the surrounding black and the insert gold - just a thought!

^I think all the chrome mesh grilles are custom made by their perpetrators...
It's more a case of buying a few feet of mesh from Demon Tweeks / Halfords etc.

Can't believe I forgot to post a pic of my new one in here!

What grille is this? It looks like the avantguard with a small mercedes badge in the middle, would this have been a custom made one?
The car was on ebay about a year ago, dont know why i still have the pictures! :)

Only just stumbled across this thread! Thought i'd stick mine on here as no-one else on here seems to have the exact same one.
It's an OEM Mercedes S600 grill that has been made to fit to the W201 grill surround. It looks similar to the "Avantgarde" style, but most of them come with 5 horizontal slats whereas this one clearly has 6. Some of the newer style ones do come with 6 slats.

Anyway, here is the front of my car:

I sold it to a mate who did the horrific mod to the avantgaurd grill i had fitted. Sadly i have lost contact with him now so dont know if it was him who ebayed it or not :-/

Hi Stwat. Is it really? Wow, i didnt know that - it is a small world, that must have sold on eBay quite a while before i bought my 190 so im guessing more than a year and a half ago. It sounds wierd but i was really interested in buying it, and was very annoyed when i didnt because i got really enthusiastic about it!!! I dont really remember how much it went for but i wouldnt have thought it was that much because back then i didnt have that much money to spend on a car, but it must have been too much for me to buy it and arrange the collection (transpotation). Im trying to remember things about it, was it a 2 litre? obviously full cosworth kit and new style grille, i think there were only 2 things wrong with it mentioned in the description one was that the rear quater window was smashed, apperently by the sellers son hitting a cricket ball through it! Also i dont think there was much or perhaps there wasnt any rust. I dont think it was in the ebay section but having said that it may have been as it would have been for sale and sold before i became a member - hope this all helps, if i think of anything else about it i will tell you right away!!!

Hi Bart, many thanks mate.

Yes it was a 2.0l. I randomly found it at a dealers whilst i was out in the firms van. Stopped and had a quick look and placed a deposit on it there and then and bought it for for £750 with 12 months MOT and 6 month tax B) I replaced all the hydraulic lifters and basically spent a lot of time effort and money doing it up. It did have a few rust issues though which basically scared me to death and made me get rid of it. Namely, both front jacking points, front wings under the arch extensions but what really scared me was lots of nasty rust on the near side strut top. It was rotten to hell!! And also on the other side below the washer bottle was rotten in the seams.

I totally loved the car to bits and spent many hours buffing and polishing it every weekend. I really should have kept it and had the welding done but i was offered a GTi at a seriously good price. I soon found out why the golf was cheap when the gearbox literally exploded!! I had a recon fitted and that one did exactly the same!!!

It was then that i came across my current 2.6 and paid £250 for it as the ignition lock was jammed solid!! But thats another story :)

I have pics of the rusty inner wings among many others of the car. Il post some if your interested although we are going off topic here

Yeah Stwat, we have sort of gone off the point of this thread a bit - sorry for that - some pictures would be interesting and yeah interesting to look at, if you have a minute i would love to see them (perhaps in another thread - or pm! :D).

It sounds like you really loved that car! If it came back up for sale would you buy it straight away??

Bart.

Id be very tempted indeed Bart but i now have a money pit called the 'Porsche' which is sapping all the money i have

IIRC i was only the third owner. I actually still have the full service book and handbook as my mate never got back to me for them!! so it would have been superb for you if you had have bought it :D

Il dig the pics out tomorrow and either post em here or pm them mate B) Or i might even start a 'mercs we wish we never got rid of thread' :)

open the hood/bonnet, unscrew the screw ont eh bottom center of the grille and the bolt thats on the back of the badge on the front,

then remove the 6 metal clips holding the plastic grille in place (may need some force)

should jsut pull out then

Watch your eys they `ping` everywhere and try not to lose any.

Make sure you give the insert a good clean, I just used washing up liqid and a brush in the sink to de grease it.

Spray it with some Plasicote plastic paint, lots of thin coats, I sprayed it waited 40 mins then did it again wait, again, wait again.
You will then get a nice shiny coat.

My teacher from school told me this process.

1 Wash with degreaser
2 Plastic primer
3 Wurth plastic paint (aerosol spray paint)

And as a degreaser he told me to use Pre-cleaner.

What can I used instead of a degreaser? Cause I dont have any time to buy some!

Why I cant sand it??

Any suggestions if I'll keep the insert grill like that or will include the silver bits that used to have!

I liked it like that, but it seems that it has something missing..

A variation on the colour coded grille, I welded over the emblem hole them smoothed out the ridges similar to the Schatze frame. Then painted and clear coated, got paint mixed at Halfords which turned out to be far too dark, ended up using a couple of cans of Ford Burgundy Red which is an almost exact match.

Hopefully I can get my Schatz insert sorted to put in it now.
