Shouldnt take long...
Its p*ss easy...

There is a guide pinned in the suspension section, Sean has created two guides one for removing springs and shocks on the front and another for the rear...

Its really simple, tools need are spring compressors, jack and a good socket set...
Fronts, you need to use spring compressors to remove the springs as they are long, and the rear you sit on axel stands and place the jack under the arm, unblt shock and before putting the jack under the car remove the arm cover 4 10mm bolts of the top of my head, then you can unbolt the bolts on the side of the arm and lower it and the spring will drop out...

Time wise i'd say 2 hours all round...
As its alot of messing about jacking the car up and down etc...

Can anyone advise if it's suitable to fit say, 40mm lowering springs onto a 1.8 without changing the shocks? I presume the ride comfort would be compromised but is it possible?

And would these do the job?

Those PI Springs are fine, yes you can fit them using standard shocks ;)
You get what you pay for, but they are a good budget option.

Or these as everyone seems to go for GSF although it doesn't say how much the drop is??

They're a 40mm drop, the GSF springs. I fitted them to one of my cars on standard springs with no problems.

I also replaced the springs to some lowering ones without removing the shocks, no problem at all... ( 2 yrs since)

At least the rear springs are dead easy if you follow the guide, I put the original height springs in every winter when changing tyres and lowering ones back every summer when roads are better. :driver:

Front ones are as said a little more tricky, I gave the job away to specialists, but I have seen guys doin´ it at home (on this forum for example :P ).
