Took a complete exhaust off a 1992 190e 2.0 (mine is a 1993 190e 2.0). As you can see in the pic the '92 on the left has a lambda sensor and mine does not, now I am convinced that my car has fuel injection....

Any body have a theory? Is it ok to use this exhaust as mine is ROTTEN. The other differences are that the 'new' one is stainless for the front half and the cat is bigger.

Thanks

If yours is an "E" then it definatly does have fuel injection.

The German word For injection starts with an E

The exhaust on the let definaly has a cat hence the Lamba sensor.
Yours (right one) doesnt have a cat thats a small silenser box.

Will it fit, probably, will it work?

I`m not sure, someone else will be able to give you a decent answer later.

You will be okay using the exhaust with the cat in ,just do away with the lambada bit,its a shame you cant change the cat for the original box ,second hand cats go for forty quid. something to do with the precious metal coating the inside of the exhaust.

sorry guys but any car that does not have a cat fitted then has a second hand exhaust with one fitted will have a negative affect

why do you think for example the 190E with a cat has a different running system.

you will notice a power drop chap

Sorry I dont understand that, the actual cat is a exhaust with a [cant think of the bloody name]but it is coated with this stuff, that attracts the exhaust molocules ,and tells the lamada sensor to enrich or decrease the amount of fuel, through the ecu,the cat box and the ordinary box are just straight through boxes, so if a ordinary box was fitted to a cat system it might cause problems,
But a lot of people have de cated their cars to avoid the expence of a cat.
does this make sense or should I go to bed,

Cars registered after Aug 1992 had cat. fitted + oxyjen sensor, also 190e cars ie. with fuel injection also have oxyjen sensors even registered before 1992.

My merc 190 E from -93, also has got a sond, but the lambda sond is fitted closer to the engine, so it should still be on the car. Try to have a look at the header if it´s there....

At least mine is there, and in that case you just need to plug the hole for the lambda and install the better exhaust and go ridin´ :driver:

Isn´t that first box on both exhausts the cat? Correct me if I´m wrong people, I´m not sure about this......

Good luck and tell us how you´re getting along with the upgrade.
Sometimes I should be doing the same, but for now i´m just trying to repair my old system B) We´ll see how long it lasts

Think i have it figured. Emission control regs did not come into effect here until some time in 1993, mine was first registered in Carlow Feb 1993, the car that I took the exhaust off was possibly a UK import.

Tomorrow is a bank holiday so I will give the exhaust a trial run and have the mixture checked on tueday morning, if it is no good I'll give MB a buzz about a new one...

Thanks all for your help.

Just found a rusty hole that needs plating...

Does anyone know if there should be a gasket/sealing ring between the manifold and the downpipes?

Thanks

Well this lunch time i fitted the exhaust (cat and all) and all is well. it has a slightly different sound and the resonance aat 2k rpm has gone. I haven't noticed a drop in power yet it feels more responsive. Ill put that down to the fact that this exhaust has NO leaks, perhaps if I used an exhaust with no cat i would feel apower gain.

Cheers all for your help.

I seem to be having some problems with my exhaust as well. I have a 1993 190E 1.8 and there is a rattle from what I thought was the cat and she seems a bit down in power. I checked the EZE-CAT under the bonnet and it indicates a cat was fitted. When I try to buy the front section I am told that there is only a small silencer box on the front pipes for the 1.8 and that no cat is fitted??? Seems strange. Will this pipe lead to the car running wrongly or will it release more power and if so does it need to have some adjustments done?

Any thoughts please?

The CAT's fitted to a 190 are of a very small type and are fitted on the downpipes. They dont look like a normal larger style CAT as fitted to other makes of car.
