hey lads...

i was just going over some older threads on the early 2.3_16v LSD. Now i intend on swapping the 16v manual gearbox and shafts etc along with the lsd diff.

however, i had assumed the diff housing would bolt straight on to the auto back axle. would i be right in saying we will have to drop the axle now as well and put in the 16v axle.. <_<

Pretty much, yes. You will most likely run into issues with different halfshaft lengths. Seeing as you have everything already in your donor car, I would swap everthing from the gearbox to the hubs. It should be easy enough as you are just disconnecting the 5 arm multilink rear and dropping out the old shafts & diff, you probably wont have to disconnect the halfshafts from the LSD either, just drop the whole lot and in with the new..

PS its a good time to examine your subframe too, I found a couple of rustholes I never would have thought were there!

ah damn. i was hoping that the shafts and the diff would swap from one axle to the other....the thought of even inspecting that 16v axle gives me shakes :( . in pretty bad nick id imagine compared to the 7 years younger auto axle..... it seems like much more work to drop the two axles etc.... <_<

me thinks a big refurb is on the cards

You can clean the axles up quite nicely, I did an alright job on mine, fairly happy... Check the halfshaft lenghts against each other, you might be lucky but I really doubt it unfortunately. See the LSD is a bit wider than the normal diff I think so the shafts are shorter. All these things you figure out as you go along, one part leads to another and another

i have just fitted an lsd on my 2.5-16,i didnt compare the drive shafts feom the asd diff ,but the asd diff is certainly wider and i'm guessing the shafts are shorter,so get the drive shafts for the lsd too,

the splines are the same in the axle end,and the thread too ,so you can use the d-shaft nut again.

the prop shaft coupling is the same size also as the asd.

when you have the diff out ,it is a good time to get any associated piping out of there,as alot of it goes over the diff,

i also ridded my car of the self leveling piping which was redundent due to having conventional shockers at the back now.

but!

remember there will be pressure in the system ,and it likes to squirt!
there is a sphere for the asd diff under the floor behind the right front wheel under a cover, when you undo this it will also squirt like no tomorrow for a few seconds ,so prepare for the situation or you will be completetely drenched in oil as i nearly was !
undo pipes slowly and have plenty of bowls and rags on hand.

i am not kidding when i say i removed around 50ft of piping ,that goes with the self leveling and the asd,but if if you have self leveling make sure you isolate the pipes for each obviously,as they often run along side each other.

I recently start to think io should remove the sls and asd assembly. Then fittingtradiional suspension and LSD.
The problems my car is having is the hydraulic valve. Then the diff (assuming it is) is making a loud roaring noise when I step on throttle. It almost souns like tire noise but I can only hear when I gstep on throttle.
Summing together, the will be quite expensive repair and to maintain in future.
Hence, perhaps i should ditch the hydraulics system all together.
Which brand LSD do you use? Do I not have too many options?
Thanks in advance
Jack

Which hydraulic valve?

Like all hydraulic systems it needs regular maintainance but once running correctly it is a superb system that will last for ages. It is part of the character of these cars and removing it for road use is a backward step in my view. Bite the bullet and fix the original system. You will not regret it. Dont forget it will also maintain the resale value and appeal of the car if you part with it in future.
