Just one thing that bothers me about my new 190, the exhaust noise when the engine is under load. Been told by mechanic that there are no leaks and that this is normal and due to it not being a proper MB part.

The sound reminds me of someone bashing a tin dustbin lid when you accelerate on from rest, then it quietens down.

My question, is this the normal sound and what if anything can I do to somehow damp this noise?

it may not be the exhaust as such
you may have bad engine mountings and this is giving enough flex to allow the exhaust to fowl the underside
or is it definitely coming from the exhaust internals ?

are you coming to retro car show as we could all have a look then ?

Im pretty sure its coming from the exhaust, cant feel any vibration through the structure or any clonks. My guess is the metal is too thin and sound is intrinsic to this i.e. a metallic almost ringing sound. Im wondering whether I could do something cunning with exhaust wrap or maybe 'just' swap out the cheap bit.

Or maybe just keep my windows wound up and the problem almost vanishes...

I'll stick my head under the car tomo to see if I can pinpoint it a bit more.

to be honest i have just fitted a cheap exhaust and it sounds a bit tinnie but no annoying noises

because you say its under load that it does it
it could be any number of things and it hard to diagnose without seeing/hearing it
