Qaulity, fit, looks etc
Look Tacky and just a waste IMO

Stick to a good SS system not those cheap universal ones, Remus as said do decent back boxs and powerflow do full systems for £220-300.
There is a aftermarket backbox on ebay if you really want to go down that route, click the link to the supersprint one:

Do it the way you want too!!

I had an Ansa tail box on mine. Sounded ok but was prone to corrosion even though it was stainless (wrong type).

Just make sure you avoid those dustbins or your car will sound like a wet fart!!

I like the twin downturned hidden pipes of the 2.6 / 16v cars (were they also fitted to a few 2.0s and 190Ds?).
I had read somewhere that there was a valid reason for downturned exhaust pipes on the W201, that it helped prevent exhaust fumes from being recirculated back into the cabin.

Yep that's very true. When i fitted an upsweped twin dtm stylele stainless back box to my 2.0l i started to get fumes in the cabin from day one.

One other piece of Aerodynamic engineering that's clearly visible on our cars (along with the W126, R107, W123 and a good few others) are the
'self-cleaning' rear light clusters. The grooved design is functional, in that it helps keep the rear clusters clean and visible even when the car is very dirty from extended periods of motorway driving ;)

Anyone noticed that the rear suspension arms on our cars have covers with an aerodynamic "fin" on them? Didn't really notice until I was reading a copy of Autocar's March 1983 road test, which mentions them!
It seems that all 2.0 cat models have the twin downturned tailpipe exhaust, mine does. From the centre box back, it looks just like a Cossie system, my centre and rear sections cost £130 fitted from my local exhaust place, (and yes, they are hard to get hold of).Good quality Swedish items as well and the car does sound a lot more grunty than a single tailpipe equipped car, a nice bassy rumble which I think sounds a bit like the old six pot E30 BMWs.
I think the problem with universal boxes is that they are not "tuned" to the engine that is breathing through it so you end up with too much (or not enough) back pressure, performance and fuel economy suffer and as Big Ben pointed out, the car ends up sounding like a goose farting through a tin trumpet.

i have a sebring back box and it did nothing for sound or performance for my 2.6.

i've arrived at the conclusion that any old muffler from a reputable company, if it's a high-flow muffler and of the right size to replace the stock muffler, is just as good as any name brand muffler, such as remus, sebring, etc.
