totally V, I am in meetings all day tomorrow, and possibly tuesday but should be free wednesday ? After 5. Anyone know does the fan or rad have to come out for the 4 cylinders ? Is it just a case of remove the belt and get a few bolts out and some jubilee clips off ? Edited by kentronix, Mon Nov 10, 2008 12:40 am.

i had the matrix and head gasket done by George Fraser, cost like £1500 and i lost so much engine power. theres's a company who i found will do a complete refubished 190 engine for £1095 + VAT. NOT bad at all, including all the warranty stuff etc. i wish i'd know about them sooner. |

Done a few checks today and it appears it is the water pump. Had a look under the mats of the passenger side footwell, no water there - so im hoping that can eliminiate the heater matrix? Although i was pissing down here today, i moved the car back slightly to see if the dry patch in the driveway became a big puddle after filling her up.... and it did! Water pump itself has lots of water around it and underneath it with water squirting out of one of the top bolts and that is also where the smoke is coming out from. The smell of coolant can be found in the smoke. I do have the big man Kentronix passing through later this evening to give it a once over (cheers my friend!) so we'll see what the verdict is.

Those thermo housings are a bitch, if you dont torque them to like, minus 5Nm, they will literally explode into a bazillion pieces of plastic and instantly kill your engine. Ok, well maybe not literally but they do crack easily

Tbh mate I don't even know if it's Metal. The Metal MB replacement is about £26+VAT iirc, and then with the banjo/nozzle etc you prolly end up spending £40ish. Call MB Colindale Parts Dept in the morn. It's still on my 'To Do' list! Edited by Neil, Mon Nov 10, 2008 11:06 pm.

Thanks for the replies guys and thanks to Kenny for making a pit stop round earlier to check the damage! ![]() GSF do the thermostat housing kit for £42.50 + vat - 10% discount (get in!) they also sell the thermostat housing gasket separately for a bargain of just 50p! I will call our dear friends at MB in the morning to see what they can offer up. Does anyone know of where we can find this little hole so we can lubricate the pump and stop the squealing then?

V, remember you only need the cover, not the entire housing. Shall I see if rob parker has one for the m102 ? I can get it delivered here as I will be in all week now. Thats where I got mine for £12 or so, no gasket though which would have been nice. |

Ah ok mate. Just had a look on GSF's site - they only list the thermostat itself, the housing and something called a thermostat seal. But doesn't mention the housing cover. If you could check with Rob Parker, i would be most grateful. I'll also check with MB in the morning and see what they say. GSF do the gasket for 50p so could always get it from there unless MB sell it separately. |

Just make sure it is metal; after what happened to Brunhilde's top hose pipe, I'm putting in a job lot order - this stuff (whatever it is) clearly has a shelf life. Gaskets, I recall, semed the same.Do not accept a plastic one from GSF or whoever, because the M-B one is only about£15... |

May not need water pump, as it could be air in the system from lack of water, this would make the pump sound noisy. OR if water got on to the belt tensioner it may need re-greasing. If it is down to pump bearing, you can buy an anti-squeak additive for water system! Edited by Stempies, Tue Nov 11, 2008 12:46 am.

Pretty sure its the pump rather than tensioner that the noise is coming from but very good point about the air, I guess you cant make any judgments until the system is up to pressure. Best bet is change the thermo housing and go from there I reckon. |
