Robert! ![]() Stempies - never knew that there was such a thing as an anti-squeak (or squeal as i like to call it!) to add into the water system. Like Kenny said, let's change the housing cover and see what difference that makes and then go from there. Though i am hoping that this will solve the leakage and the squealing..... i sometimes wonder if i ask for too much??

I remember we went through all this shite the other year with the dealer metal part verses the plastic GSF part. I just dug out my receipts. The metal thermo cover was £7.18 and the rest of the parts needed were similarly cheap. The total bill with VAT added was £14.11 and that was with all washers, hollow screw and banjo union etc. The ECP ang GSF prices take the piss to be honest. Edited by stwat, Tue Nov 11, 2008 1:58 am.

Just got off the phone from those lovely people at MB Colindale, he mentioned that i will need all the parts as listed above from Neil's post (thanks for that dude! ) + the gasket that sits underneath the cover at £0.55, and that the total for all of these will be around the £30 mark + vat.He said that his system doesn't show the material of the housing cover but i'm guessing it will be the metal one that everyone here is talking about. Still need to hear Kenny's price tag and see how that compares. If it's around the same - what do we do, go for dealership metal or the GSF plastic one (half the price) ??

what I do and its thoughouly unscientific is switch to the screwdriver end on type handle, rather than a ratched type. That way its not possible to over tighten it as you dont have the leverage. Then if it leaks you need to do it a bit more. Mine didnt. If using a ratchet type, hold your hand over the pivot rather than at the end of the handle, it should have the same effect. Its impossible to judge the force your putting on something when your at the end of a lever. Before you start, if you have any you may as well give your nuts (I know they are bolts but its not a funny) a soak in wd40 for 20 minutes, just in case. I doubt it will be a problem but there is no harm, and it may even get your hands dirty

V you tell if it's the pump, leave the engine running, make sure there is plenty of pani in there and you will see it leak from the pump pulley. under running pressure she will piss m8, you could probaly smell coolant inside cause you might of had heating on or the wind blowing it back as you were driving. Also like the other chap said check the corner seems on the rad, very common for them to leak from there. If your gona get that done also change the thermo stat b4 you put fresh coolant and water in. Ps. I got a reply from Stevo bout the tops....... thankx robbie... |

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!! I'm happy to report that it appears that the problem seems to have been solved. Turned out that when Kenny came round to help change over the thermostat housing cover (which was cracked) the expansion tank cap was not as solid as it could have been and ended up releasing under pressure and chucking boiling hot water everywhere (which would explain why one side of my car looked like a swimming pool a little while ago!) So with a shiny new thermostat housing cover and an even shinier new expansion tank cap, she seems to be holding in all her coolant like a good girl! As for the initial 'squealing' noise i had - no idea still! It came back earlier on, got higher in pitch and then went away!? It then came back very faint so in order to elimate the fan belt from the equation i sprayed some WD40 on the centre part of the fan and the fan belt and then the noise seem to disappear. Whilst i can't guarantee that it was the fan / fanbelt making this noise, i'm just happy it's gone! It still may have been a water pump bearing, but not sure if that makes and noise and then goes away again? Anywho, with the new parts and lots of help from the big man Mr. Kentronix - the car is now back on the road. And boy does it feel good to have that nice, stiff suspension set up as opposed to soft/bouncy Pug 206 & W202 C-Class i've been driving this past week!! A big thanks again to Kenny for coming round and changing the bits over and a big thanks to everyone else here for their inputs!

Forgot to mention - all smoking has gone too. It did let off quite a bit of steam the other night when the housing cover was changed but it looked like it was coming off the side of the thermostat housing where there was coolant present around it from where it was leaking. But let it run up to temperature today and no steam or smoke. Happy days!

excellent, glad to be of help. I think the steam was just a wet belt and surrounding areas. Was a bit unnerving though ![]() The metal housing is far better than the old plastic. |

Sure, I was thinking more about it being the expansion tank cap though. No such thing as luck... it comes down to years of accumulated experience of running old bangers.

I hope you didn't get your hands too dirty, V. Were you wearing marigolds when you did this? Great to hear the problem solved though, thanks to the help of the 'Tronix. It's always great when it turns out to be a small thing. Shrekky cured a terrible squeaking noise from my water pump a year or so ago using a couple of squirts WD40. I was convinced it was something much worse... |

Hmmmm, my newer auto has just dumped all her water. Naturally it is dark, cold and I am far from home. Going to have to park and come back tomorrow. Grrrr. Head gasket done last month. New w.pump, new ally thermo housing. What can it be? Water was pissing out and I can't feel that its a hose or the rad? Duff pump or a block freeze plug??? |

Hmm, just got back to the car and it's the blanking plug in the new water pump- clearly operator error....... No wonder it pissed out so fast! Right **insert swear word here** to get at behind the belt.I must have popped it in hand tight and then been more obsessed with getting the gasket face dry etc. |
