hi all
have got my 190 for 2 months and it has been running fine
last night something scratched the ground as I go over a speed bump (someone fat sitting at the back...)
I guess it is the exhaust, but it was just a little scratch, only made little sound when scratching
then, my car vibrates quite badly when idling, and struggle to move off (like in wrong gear)
but it is better once picked up speed
any one had this problem before? probably loose exhaust pipe??
cheers...

The dreaded vibration,

A lot of us have had it,

Nobody knows what it is,

It could be a thingy on your propshaft, (I forget what they are called)

But, it does come & go....................

Not much help I know....

The propshaft thingy is called the "center support bearing". A worn bearing can give you noise and vibration.
Also it could be idling too low, therfore giving you vibration from the engine.
I would get the car on a ramp and have a good look underneath. did you hit the fuelpipe and bend it?
Check you ingintion, OVP, Ingnition leads.

surely not idle speed, because I can still feel the vibration when I keep the rev at about 1300rpm
the vibration is still acceptable...but moving off feel very strange
not sure about fuel pipe, but I guess it is fine, as when I open up the bonnet, the engine runs and sounds fine without much vibration
someone suggests a blocked exhaust pipe, porbably broken catalyst...
what do u guys think?
will take it to garage for a check today....but dont want to spend too much
thanks for your help

Are you sure your vibration problem is connected to the exhaust problem ?

What you describe sounds to me like it is not firing properly on all cylinders.

How old are your plugs , leads and dizzy cap ?

I would have a look at these first, dont see how the exhaust thing could cause this.

One other thought, I think there is some sort of a sensor on the exhaust system, perhaps the lead has pulled off.

not sure if it is the exhaust system, but I would suspect so as "something" scratched the ground just before this happens...

I have also thought of the firing, but I dont know how to check if the plugs are working fine...can you please tell me how?

I dont know how old they are, mine is a 1993 190E, how long usually does the original ones last?

about the exhuast system sensor, where is the lead located?

thanks again :$

Hi Boris T
I think I have the same problem with my 1993 190E. While idling in Park or Neutral the car constantly vibrates and when you move off, it struggles with a slight roaring sound but once you hit above 60mph, the vibrations are no longer there and you don't notice it until you reduce speed or stop at the lights. I really hope the fix you did will fix mine. If you don't mind me asking, did you change the spark plugs and dizzy cap aswell?

Thanks,
Chuck
